Any modding done with the "Aux" units you can order around?

Apparently, not only is there land-based air that you can use for recon purposes, but also Auxilary Merchant Cruisers, ship-based scout planes, and at least one other unit type (looks like a DD forget the name). It would seem that the possibilities for this kind of thing are endless. Can you attach an entire task force to one of these icons and order it around? Can you extend the radius of action to even ocean-wide diameters? Just curious.
