Default Map marking question

I play GWX 2.0 Commander with Map update active.
When I select a vessel or plane on the map a cirkle appears around the selection with the selected object i centre of the cirkle what does this cirkle represent?

Depending on the type of ship, they represent:
1. Visual range-the largest dashed circle.
2. Asdic Range-the semi circle in front of the ship.
3. Hydrophone range-the circle with the pie shape out of it aft of the ship.
4. Radar range-the smaller circle-stay out of this one later in the war.

These ranges are under best of conditions.

Does this mean a 100% detection if you are moving within the cirkle or do you still stand a chanse to remain undetected say passing behind a screening escort into the convoy even in "good" conditions say moonlight and calm seas.

I've gone undetected on the surface in the visual circle and in the asdic/hydrophone circles while submerged. I'd bet it depends on conditions auch as weather, speed of your sub, depth, etc.

Now radar, I've had no luck. Last couple patrols off the US coast, I've run into US destroyers with radar that picked me up as soon as I entered the radar circle. Fortuneately, the US destroyers at this stage are not very good.

You might try different zoom levels if it doesn't hit the center just right. Zoom in or out and move the previously made mark.
I bet it has something to do with the pixels in the map and the mark will be made on a pixel. I'm no expert, so take that with a grain of salt.

On my last patrol Jan-Feb -40 it was heavy fog, storm (15m/s) night and raining.
In short terms it was zero visability. YET the brittish escorts managede to locate me on the surface long before I could even see them. Radar so early? or a bug? I dont know I tried for two days to get in a good position but had to give it up. A large convoy.

As frustrating as it may be, personally I wouldn't even attempt to attack a convoy in such weather conditions, I would try and keep contact and hope for an improvement in the weather. However, that doesn't answer your question regarding the destroyers ability to detect you under such conditions, which I can't fully explain. In my experience I have managed several surface attacks on convoys at night (pre-radar). The key for me is to approach the convoy at ahead slow (below 5kts) no faster as this will increase your bow wave and make you easier to detect. Only yesterday a Flower Corvette was zig-zagging and came within 1,000 metres of my position and just sailed on unaware of my presence. Weather conditions were on my side in that it was overcast and heavy seas. On another occassion when sailing back to Lorient at night, the weather was raining and thunder and lightning, visibility no more than 350-400 metres when my watch officer shouts "ship spotted" and I immediately thought this must be close! Up on the conning tower I spotted during a flash of lightning a destroyer very close that was escorting a convoy. Luckily he didn't spot me, a close shave but I got away with it.

If you're interested I did post sometime ago a picture of my uboat in the midst of a convoy to show how close you can get if the conditions are right, here's the link http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=139413.

When attacking on the surface at night, keep it slow like Nemo said. I also try to run decks awash-set depth at 7m. Your watch crew stays up and it makes you harder to see although your speed drops off, so make sure you're in good position before you go decks awash.
If you run around the convoy at flank speed and show a large silouhette(:hmm: spelling don't look right), you'll get spotted.

@Nemo:
Looked at your picture. Hafta start calling you "Silent Otto" for getting inside the convoy like that.

Thanks sharkbit, as the post says, I was really proud of that attack.

Justifiably, too.
