Default Good man for the job

Gen. Patreus in interview:

Two years back, before he went off to Iraq for his second job, I outed myself as some kind of fan of him when linking these two articles, which are old, but still worth to be read:

http://www.spiegel.de/international/...455165,00.html

One is wondering what already could have been acchieved if he would have been involved in planning the Afghanistan war or would have been in command from the very beginning, instead of letting him arrive late and repair damage as kind of a troubleshooter. I live by the impression that he is one of the american military's leading experts on counterinsurgency. if only they would have realised that at the beginning - and not several years later.
