Default Photo Recon

I have SHIV4, and TMO (no U-Boat mod). Patched to1.4.
I am in position to take the pictures-night time, submerged, one knot. I passed through the camera icon on map moved in closer, about 2000 yards, I am locked on but the camera does not light up. I can't surface because of a gun boat and several fishing boats.
What have I done wrong or not done? I have only done one other photo recon and it worked. I don't recall now how I did it.
I have read the manual and the SHIV4 guide.

Any help would be most appreciated,

Ron Banks MMCM(SS), USN(Ret)

You probably need to be closer. In horrible weather conditions I've been unable to take photos at 400 yds, but normally it seems ok at 1000-1500 yds range.

Someone mentioned somewhere you had to have enough light.

I sort of remember doing this mission at night and thinking that was a bit silly but perhaps it was patched.

Maybe you have to wait till the sun comes up

Same here! The guys doing the photo analysis were obviously alliens possessing superior tech as the photos were the definition of "black"!
Another succesfully concluded mission!

just a thought but if your squatting low to avoid detection sometimes your camera wont light up because its not seeing you as at periscope depth.

try raising your depth a little.

ps- i have never had problems with taking pictures at night

If you're having trouble with the photo recon missions, you may want to give this mod a try.

I tried this mod. Maybe I didn't install it correctly. But I still can't manage to get the photo icon to light up. I came right up on the Jap ship with no success. I had to back off because I was getting fired upon. :hmm:

The mod does fix the recons however you need to install it in port (in the office) before you set sail on your patrol - it won't work if it is installed en route... maybe that's the problem?

It's most likely a distance and weather issue rather than time of day. Before 1.4 I had issues with detecting enemies in fog, even though I could clearly see their reflection because of ROW, and the game arbitrarily wouldn't let me detect the enemy until it was less than 1000 or so yards away.

It could also be due to the target's proximity to the marker on your map. Try aiming at something as close to the marker as possible, and try to very close to the marker yourself.

Default Same Problem

I thought that I had the same problem with the periscope camera. However, upon further investigation, I found that the camera is automatically activated under certain circumstances dictated by the game situation. I went to Hiroshima harbor on a recon mission and until I was within range of the program's "selected target," the camera icon would not light. However, to my surprise, when I took a look at a certain vessel, the icon lighted up and I took the picture. My clipboard then showed that the mission objective had been completed and I was on my way. The picture I took was on the clipboard for review. Evidenty, the camera is not active all the time and is active only when the mission dictates. Too bad it is not active all the time, you could keep a cronicle of your kills. Old_tex

If you ever get photo recon in Osaka, bin it. I cannot get across that shallows AND destroyers at the smae time!! Even under silent running in 150 feet of water, they find me.

I made it out from Osaka harbor but I was lucky. I went in and out through the narrow pass on the right side. Speed, 1 knot to conserve batteries. Stayed on the right side of the "lake", got my picture, started back out. As luck would have it a convey came in behind me, the ships went to the left, the escorts to the right. One pinged me, 3 others joined in. Very shallow, took a few close hits. Managed to sink one with a bow shot. Use decoy and managed to evade somehow. The rest of the escorts appeared to be attacking the wreck of the one I sunk possibly. Anyway they were busy and it didn't involve me. Planes also came over and dropped bombs on that location. Surfaced well out away from shore when night came to recharge batteries. Just rode around the harbor for several hours like a ski boat. Used radar to evade while this was done. Creeped out same way I came in, the escort at the pass picked me up and attacked, manage to sink him as well. After that, surface and all ahead full towards deep water.

All that for a picture.

Never had a problem with photorecon, though I've only gotten it once, had to sneak into rabul and say hi to the carriers, so I did, the 4 DD patrols caught wind of me but after I sunk one and damaged the other they kinda lost their will to depth charge. (did take one depth charging but the damage was light) Got to like 3kish took my pic but got closes still and fired a salvo of torps to take out one of the carriers (woo first carrier kill) and got the hell out of there (I was a s-18 class only 4 torps ready at any one time)

Though thinking about it I should of really sunk that other carrier because I literly got hounded by planes for about 2 weeks, I could of swore a carrier was chasing me. :rotfl:

It also must of developed into an airbattle because I started seing swarms of "survivors" on both sides on the way out.
