Default Don't you see some strange things!

During an attack on a convoy I fired two torpedoes at an Empire-type freighter. Didn't need two really as the first torp caused enough damage, but when the second torp hit the ship split in two. The bow section sunk in seconds, but the stern section remained afloat (see pics). I did consider the deck gun to finish it off but thought I might hit the survivors, being the considerate Kaleun I am. With no torps left I headed back to Wilhelmshaven.

Very odd! Maybe they were storing corks and ping-pong balls in that half of the ship?

Cool. In my searching I've found more than one instance of a ship breaking in half, one half sinking, and the other being towed to a harbor, or sinking under tow a day later, or a whole ship being towed breaking in half a day later, or a...

I'm glad to see this kind of variety.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_New_Orleans_(CA-32)

"When flagship Minneapolis was struck by two torpedoes, New Orleans, next astern, was forced to sheer away to avoid collision, and ran into the track of a torpedo, detonating the ship's forward munition magazines and gasoline tanks which severed 150ft of her bow just forward of turret #2. The severed bow, including turret #1, swung around the port side and punched several holes in the length of New Orleans' hull before sinking at the stern and damaging the port inboard propeller. A fourth of her length gone, slowed to 2 knots (4 km/h), and blazing forward, the ship fought for survival. Individual acts of heroism and self-sacrifice along with skillful seamanship kept her afloat, and under her own power she entered Tulagi Harbor near daybreak 1 December."

You'd never think it possible looking at the photos (on the wiki page).

Erich, your link needs to be fixed. You accidentally cut off the second parenthesis, which makes it a dead link.

But you're right - it's an amazing story. There are many like that. One ship is carrying steel and sinks in 30 seconds with all hands. Another merchant eats eight torpedoes over a ten-hour period before finally going down, and a third takes one torpedo, which is a dud, and because some plates were ruptured actually floods and sinks later.

You never know what's going to happen, and it's good when the game reflects that.

Don't forget to install the lifeboats mod first, then the rowers mod

Jim,

The SS Ohio & Operation Pedestal to Malta... it's become one of my favorite WW2 naval history stories.

similiar strange thing:
I have raided Dover, one of sunken ships was Troop Transport (broken apart after 2 torpedo hits). On the return way - few miles from Dover - I have seen smoke, object was identified as floating part (half of TT) of Troop Transport. Dont know how could it get there (from harbour closed with subnet)...
