I'm working on using the strategic map to create a freestanding map for each year (i.e., 1942, 1943) that locates each Japanese vessel sunk by US subs as closely as I can plot each. If this is saved as a graphics file (any type, .dds, .tga etc) is there someone who knows how to make this available in-game? It would be useful to be able to open it (maybe by clicking on an icon on the navigator table or some such) after one has gotten the assignment and in patrol to see where best 'pickings' would exist. For now we are only told to patrol 'shipping routes' with no guidance for where those are.
Of course, Ubisoft may not have used any historical shipping routes in the development of the game and all Japanese ships may appear completely at random with no relationship to historical routes. Does any modder close to the development of the game know the answer? No sense wasting time on a map that has no value. |

If you are playing SH4 without any of the major mods (RSRDC in particular) I've found that the map that came with the game, and common sense, are enough for me to hunt down ships. In any case I understand that the Japanese in the game has far more ships than historical, so targets were never an issue for me for the brief time I played the stock game.
If you use RSRDC you'll find that the number of ships have been toned down considerably, to conform as much as possible to historical data. I've used this mod for numerous patrols and provided I know where to hunt I've never had problems finding ships to sink. There's also a historical map of Japanese shipping lanes during the war, someone posted a link to it. It's similar to the game map. So, to answer your question, if you can locate this map you'll know where to hunt. |

Here is the map of Japanese shipping routes. Very handy when running RSRDC.

Zero Niner: Am using RSRD with Tm1.52. And yes some common sense works, but why not use real data if it's available? That was true in 1942-1945 and equally now.
Virtualpender: I did find your fine map after I'd posted. I do know that the Japanese shifted shipping lanes as the war progressed, for that reason I thought it would be useful to have available (as COMSUBPAC did) a plot of sunk ships reasonably accurate for each year. The problem is how to get to the current year map in-game. Maybe the best one can do is print out a copy and have it for reference when leaving port. |

This site has some good battle maps of Japanese, merchant, and military routes. In the right hand bottom corner of each map, they can be enlarged. Puts
