Monty Python's Black Knight makes a guest appearence in Silent Hunter 4

I was patrolling Formosa Straits when I happened upon a large freighter. I put 3 torpedoes into it during a submerged night attack and thought it sank as it disappeared from persicope view, however I noticed the kill wasn't credited in the captain's log. Upon surfacing I saw this

and a shot from my gunsight

Torpedoes? what torpedoes? it's only a scratch!!! I then pumped 18 rounds from my deck gun into the damned thing trying to get it to sink. Unfortunately something happened as I was switching views from binoculars to gunsight trying to keep the gun locked on the dark shape and the game graphics got all messed up and caused a CTD. It really hacked me off at first, then I laughed at the absurdity of it :p

Well, Its not all the way under water. But its down there enough, Ive had merchents that are setting up in the air at 90 degrees like yours and have still got credit.

I can't tell much. One image is now gone and the remaining one doesn't show a lot of detail.

I recall another fairly recent thread that described a similar incident and had an image of a terribly beaten up old freghter that just would not sink.

Maybe these are related? Maybe another easter egg like the FD only not as widely reported?

How deep is the water there? I've seen a couple of times in the past that if the ship hits bottom before the game gives you the "She's going down" message, it won't proceed any farther and you won't get credit. I can never tell for certain what will happen in shallow water, though; sometimes it happens and mostly it doesn't.

Dont feel too bad.

Way back ... around patch 1.2 or so I did a photo recon mission. Snapped photos of two carriers sitting at anchor.

It was too much to resist, I fired all bow tubes spun and then the stern tubes. The carriers burst into flames, listed, and settled down on the shallow bottom.

No credit

But that was way back then prior to the 'final' patches and mods.

they must have patched that. I sink em in port often and always get credit, even if they dont go down.

you know that happened to me.

back in my noob days (2 days ago) when i thought that 90 ft depth was really deep. i got raped with some DC lovin.

well my depth meter said i was about 90' underwater i look on my periscope to see whats going on (i have external view off) and my bow was above water and i noticed i wast at a 180 degree angle.

than a DD rammed me and i sank.

I thought it went like this:

If you cause more then the maximum hit points of the ship in damage you will get credit for the sinking. regardless of how much of her is sitting above water.

If the ship goes pass a certain point while sinking your given credit regardless of the amount of Hit point damage done.

The glitch occurs when you do not cause more then the maximum hit point damage and the boat settles in shallow water, before your given the message of unit destroyed.

You could continue to pump Deck gun round into her, but depending your mods, or other variables, this could take a while.

I've actually sunk a pair of battleships at anchor in Truk, they settled on the bottom and I got credit for them. That's why I thought this was so odd, just a small portion of the bow sticking up and still nothing, water was over 120 feet at that point, I checked and saw it was just sort of hanging there. Oh well, who'd have thought there would be a bug in a video game?
