Default What is your favorite torpedo(s) ?

Long time I wanted ask you: what torpedo(s) is the best in your opinion ?

Personnaly I doubt again.
For a single merchant I often use the T1 and I always hit.
But if many ship with escort, the T3 still the most efficient.
In the end of the war, the T5 acoustic makes a good job too.

Some torpedos I don't know really.
The T1 LuT 1 for example.
Not enough experience.

Note that this topic is inspired by the difficulty I had to choose my torpedos recently, in June 1944. There were so many choices that I really don't knew what was best...

I have played several careers in SH3 and I must say I have to agrre with the above choices.

Even in late 44-45, I still carry T1a's.

The very late T7's with the second setting option.

And the T5 acoustic.

T5 acoustics to take care of any DD's who get to close, and T1's and T7's for the convoys.

Only one carrer, early in the war, june 1940, only T1 and T2, i prefer steam ones, because of the speed, altough sometimes an invisible torpedo from the surface would be better.
I´ll be looking to this thread to learn.

39-mid 41: Type I steam torps. That speed makes surfaced night time attacks without calculations easy.

Mid 41 - 43: Type II electric torps. mean you won't see as much of those nasty destroyers who are starting to become a challenge.

43 - 44: Ladder pattern torps. allow you to fire from longer range with less calculation and more chance of a hit.

44 - 45: Acoustic torps. have obvious advantages, but you will probably be too dead to use them.

About the T1 LuT 1, any experienced guy ?

About the T5, few days ago I fired one without my periscope witch was broken !
And she hit the target !
Just put the ship in the approximatively right direction and make fire. T5 go herself to the nearest noise without any calculation !

(stop your engines, it's better...)

I used to be a G7a person all the way... but... Well, using them in daylight is a pain and the ship sometimes detects them.. major annoyance! G7e's while slower are undetectable visually, and despite a dodgy magnetic fuse... you gotta love their impact boom booms.

Do we have any information on how SH3 and GWX models the detection of steam torpedoes?

Some of my references state that the trail from a steam torpedo could only be seen under specific circumstances (unlike the initial belch upon launch).

But there are historical references of people seeing the torpedo trail so at least a few times it was detectable.

However that is in real life and SH3 is a game.

The important question is how does SH# and GWX model this?

We gots any smart ladies and gentlemen with actual insight in to this coding?

Electric almost exclusively. It's late '42, so I have a few more options now. But I've found I still stick with my electric eels. Surface night attacks are great like this, especially with OLC2 and the darker nights. Neither me or my eels get detected and if it's a lone merchant or even a pair of them together, I rarely have to dive.

Convoys take a little more finesse, since you need to be much closer with those electrics. But if you can sneak in and get your shots off, they are all in for a big surprise.

Got tired of my steam torps getting detected and the whole attack run being spoiled. Though when I used to harbor raid, I loved them. They were awesome for sniping stationary targets at extreme distances.

I find the TI and TIII best for convoy work, the TII doesn;t have enough range for firing from outside the convoy, although I do always carry a few for lone merchants by daylight.

The fun part about merchants spotting steam torpedoes is that they usually spot them too late if you fire from less than 1500 meters, and there is a chance they zig when they should have zagged, especially when firing at 70 degrees AOB or so, which then makes the torpedo hit square on 90 degrees, very nice.

I would suggest not using steam torpedoes on single ships by day, especially warships since they can easily avoid, but at night their higher speed and/or longer range makes them your best bet until the TIII comes around, when that's available I use it almost exclusively.

Haven't had a lot of luck with the FaT and LuT torpedoes, although shooting around corners in harbors is fun with them

I like the acoustic homers, they can save your bacon but I only carry 1 or 2 and never use them against merchants

T-III's & T-IV's

While the IV's are mainly for anti-escort duty stern shots, I like to stash 2-3 for the forward tubes in a type VI patrol. The T-V's are a step up if the career lasts long enough.
