Sailig from Pearl. Time: September through October 1942. Assigned Patrol zone: Mariannas Islands.
Suddenly, I cant intercept or even make contact with any enemy ships. From Junks to Carriers. From Destroyers to freighters. I get plenty of contact reports....many within what ought to be and has been before, easy intercept range. Weather not a factor its the same from fair with no or little winds to heavy weather. Diving doesn't help...I can't make sonar contact with any targets...even when I race around to get ahead of a convoy, then dive and listen. Now then.. I've played this patrol through 3 times!!!. It has been the same each time. I even left the patrol zone and headed to and stood off Tokyo Bay and to the Guadacanal theater. Same thing..can't intercept a single solitary enemy vessel. Plenty of patrol planes though. It seems the sim is trying to tell me something but danged if I know what it is. ![]() So I headed back to Hawaii and ended the patrol. I'm starting a new one latter today to see if the "spell" has been broken. I did save this ill-fated patrol in case someone can provide me with the basis for an epiphany. ![]() |

I was starting to think the other guys have an enormous telescope packed on to the leading escort which can somehow see over the horizon, but I'm glad to know it isn't only me. |

Are you running any mods?

Only parts of the PE and a few mijnor adjustments I made myself...nothing to account for this I would think.

Ditto.... also glad it isn't me alone. I'm thinking that maybe the sim is telling us we need surface radar ASAP. Anywho...I'm off now to play the next mission and see if anything has changed. |

I started the next patrol (restarted...tried doing a refit but the interception problems remained..it required a full patrol end ) and eveything is back to normal. I again drew the Marianna Islands for patrol but this time the very first convoy report I successfully intercepted (and decimated).
I think what you and I encountered was the game trying to model the heavy Japanese aircover's effect of warning away all their shipping. This was causing them to divert from their base course and we were then missing them on our predicted interception routes. So if this is assumption is correct, then the corrective action would be to stay sumerged except in heavy weather and total darkness and don't give the patrol planes opportunities to detect your presence. "course that is going to make it tough to intercept at all....but what else can you do. ![]() Lets hope the flyboys clear the skys soon. ![]() |

Don't forget...
As the war progressed the IJN became more accustom to our tactics. They won't always continue on the same course. |

No doubt that they would "change their tactics" but that was hardly the point.
![]() The question was why all of a sudden we were unable to make any intercepts at all, under any conditions. Then why in a matter of weeks the problem spontaneously cleared up. |

I'm only my 3rd patrol, so I'm at the start of the war. So, it makes sense to me that targets are few and far between at the moment. One thing I've discovered with so few targets (compared to stock SH4 1.4) is that when I do get a target I take my frustration out on it and blast the ever loving s#$@ (stuffing is the word cause this is a family site afterall) out of the hapless ship.
One thing I wonder though is if it's near the end of the war and one has lots of tonnage does SH4 reflect that there isn't much left of the IJN and therefore not much left to find? |
