Default My first impressions (and help needed!)

Just thought I would share my first impressions with this game. I made it through sub school after a few tries on the last two missions and started out a career. I decided that I was going to go 100% realism right from the beginning, with the exception of unlimited fuel and external camera.

My first career ended in me being bombed by some Jap planes.

So did my second.

And my third.

So after looking up some plane dodging tactics on here I finally managed to make it through! I made contact with a ship at 0200 and used my sonar to guide me close enough where I could make out the freighter in the darkness. I set up my shot like in some of the videos I downloaded (thanks guys!) and fired two torpedoes. At this point I'd like to note that in my previous unsuccessful careers I had missed probably 3-4 times and hadn't sunk a ship. However, this time was different. I have never seen a more beautiful explosion in my life. And then.......

CTD

I've gotten probably 8-10 CTDs since I started playing two days ago and I'm not sure why. I'm running 1.4 with no mods and the latest graphic card drivers (8800GT). I am absolutely loving this game (especially the payoff of lining up a manual shot) but it is hard to play when I spend 10 minutes real time getting to Honshu only to CTD. Maybe I should just start saving more often.

I searched trying to find some reasons for the CTDs and I couldn't find anything concrete. They seem to happen when I click a button, but which button I click doesn't matter. They have happened on 5 or 6 different buttons at different times, so no rhyme or reason that I can find.

Thanks in advance and good hunting!

Paisano, welcome to Subsim! What are the rest of your specs on your computer. I'm wondering how much ram you have and what OS are you running.

Windows XP P4 3.6GHz
3 GB RAM

Since my last post I have gone through and completely wiped the video drivers and reinstalled them. Just played for a few hours with no problems, so it looks like those Jap merchants could be in trouble! I'm already painting two more kills on my boat.

Glad it's working. You should be able to run SH4 fine with those specs. Now, go give the nips some hell!
