I want to say.. Thank You.. for that excellent video you've made. It's the first time one has really shown how to plot an attack and carry it out.
You were slow,careful and explained every move you made very clearly. It all really came together for me. And it's the only one which has moved my game experience up a notch or two. So again thank you sir! steinbeck.. ![]() |

I was curious why it is called the "Dick O'Kane" method?
In O'Kane's book "Wahoo," he clearly discusses how Cmdr Morton trained him to use this method. In all fairness, shouldn't it be called the "Mush Morton method?" Regards, Feltan |

Hmmmmmm. Well, Dick O'Kane survived and wrote the book.
![]() We found allusions to a technique that wasn't spelled out in detail, but gave plausibility to our method in Dick O'Kane's Wahoo book. Of course, at this point, right or wrong, changing the name wouldn't accomplish anything but confusion. Have you checked out my new link to the Dick O'Kane Sonar Only (by God!) Method? I guarantee it will blow your mind! Go to the end of WernerSobe's advanced TDC thread for the link. Werner still has me trumped. He developed, but never released, a passive sonar only attack. It does work, but the lack of range data means known misses. It might not be practical, but I'd love to see how it works just to appreciate the technical virtuosity!

I too viewd your video, and you did a very nice job -- I should have said thanks from the start. What you are calling the Dick O'Kane method was referred to as the constant bearing attack by Morton. He learned it before the start of WWII in S boats. S boats did not have a TDC, so everything had to be done manually to include dialing in gyro angles on the physical torpedo. To do this, they had a tool called a banjo -- I don't know its official name. What Morton did, I believe, was to use the TDC to set gyro angles for the torpedos instead of using a banjo, but to solve the rest of the firing solution in the same manner S boats (and in fact any pre-TDC boat) did. In essence, you just need to remember that the internal angles of a triangle always add to 180. If you have a 90 degree intercept point, and you know your bearing to the target -- the AOB is 180 minus the other two. Get range to and speed of the target, and you are essentially done. What I think your instructional video did not take full account of was that by using the "updates on map" feature of SHIV, you are getting near-perfect location data on approaching targets. In real life this had to be done, the range and bearing, by stadiameter or other manual means. Using this method without "updates on map" is very different -- and points out the inaccuracy of the in-game stadiameter. Try comparing the automatically updated map location with manually generated range and bearing -- you will be shocked, and disappointed. A fleet boat commander had an entire team to assist with tracking. So, I don't feel bad using the auto map updates -- it isn't cheating or gamey to me. With TMO map updates on is actually more realistic than map updates off. I share your misgivings about the map updates with the stock game. Oh, and you'll notice that my positions for speed and course are taken with radar in the video, so it is entirely realistic and you would do the same thing with map updates off.

I have looked at and studied EACH film clip you ever produced. EACH ONE taught me a TON of stuff! Keep up the good work. Your Dick'O'Kane approach with manual targeting has me enjoying the game like the day I bought it. I ONLY play the game with manual targeting , thanks to you.
