I heard about this.
Must head down to Whitehall and whack Gordon Brown with a fish. That should knock some sense into him. ![]()

hmmm, blanket tracking of information of private citizens speaks all too clearly of a failure of the authorities to do their jobs when it comes to a few specific cases and individuals - now that the UK is such a hotbed of terrorism and civil conflict I'm sure they cannot afford to waste any more public money on individual surveillance... the logical step is to spy on everyone, no?
Given that fact the gunned down an innocent man on a tube train not so long back, I think they'd be better off refining their skills in keeping tabs on already suspected individuals. Quote:
They already have the power to spy on suspect individuals for the purposes of criminal or counter terrorism investigation, why do they need to cast the net to include everyone? What, are they missing that many terrorists in the UK? Or are they getting twitchy about how the people will react to yet more taxes and unfavourable laws? Seems like more wasted money and effort to me. The simple answer to this is to and all email and mobile correspondence by replacing the words 'goodbye' or 'see you' and the like with words like this one: BOMB! me: "ok so we'll meet later on then, ok?" mate: "yer righto, sounds good." me: "ok, BOMB!" mate: "BOMB!"

National ID cards, ability to be detained without charge, 24/7 survellance via CCTV making us the most suveyed nation in the EU and now this... Simple response
F**K THAT!!! Brown can go screw himself, the ignorent ***** and all the other useless lifeforms that inhabit whitehall have become detached from reality. They think that by proding the hornets nest with a big stick will make them all feel more secure. All this will do is reduce public confidence in the police/security services and create tension not only between ethnic groups but with the governent in general. We are supposed to have freedom to protest, but the other year before brown became PM a man was taken away by police because of his protesting against the government (in a peaceful manner, no thrown molotov cocktails at whitehall lol).

That is pure crazyness from a citizens perspective, but a form of control from a governments. Considering I don't think the majority of UK citizens have a backbone to stand up to it (no offense anyone), I'm guessing this is an inevitability.

"These are dangerous times. When we are afraid, we want to be protected, and since we cannot protect ourselves against such horrors as mass murder by bombers, we are tempted to run to the government.
A government that is always willing to trade the promise of protection for our freedom, which left, as always, the question: How much freedom are we willing to relinquish for such a bald promise." Gerry Spence

Another suggestion where email is concerned - use encryption.
What are they going to do, demand you don't use encryption pretty please, or try and legislate against citizens using encrypted email? I'm sure someone has tried to do this before. How's about this then: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/m...er/7409433.stm Steer clear of manchester (aka the rainy city) then.

But if you encrypt your E-mail you will just call more attention to you by an increasingly paranoid government.
A government that might feel it would be justified in some preemptive action for the "greater good". When the government fears the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. - Thomas Jefferson

Sometimes I have this queer feeling that these preemptive security measures do not raise security, but sooner or later will make people behave like suspicious terrorists in attempts to adapt to and dodge the omnipresent surveillance. I for example can very well imagine that maybe one not so far away day I will start to avoid electronic communication tools, computer and internet alltogether, even telephone and who knows - maybe even letter writing.
Which makes me a top suspect, because if I have not something evil to hide there is no reason why I should be against being surveilled - that is their perverse logic these days. the same logic that was quoted by the Nazi secret police: "Aufrechte Deutsche haben doch nichts zu verbergen!" Security authorities and EU politicians in general really need to learn how self-fulfilling prophecies do function. They are creating them by an assembly line, it seems. Damn, the 80s felt so nice, and wide in time. Today I live by a feeling that it all is just a rathole, and states heading back into the times of absolutism. It really needs efforts not to turn cynical and bitter when listening to daily lunatic news. On occasions like this, I feel old, really old.
