Default Bet You Never Had A Ship Do This...

In my continuing quest for merchant ships and their names, I stumbled across this at www.warsailors.com, a Norwegian merchant website:
Quote:
Bomma was southbound with general cargo and was off Romsdal when 2 German aircraf flew in low on Apr. 9-1940 (German attack on Norway). The captain dropped anchor and the crew took refuge in the woods.
That doesn't happen often in any game I've ever played.:rotfl:

Oh, Bomma was also part of the fleet that transported Norway's gold for safekeeping in the US.

I've read a few articles over the years of Italian skippers beaching their vessels in the Med the minute a warship appears on the horizon

How about the U-boat sunk by a toilet malfunction? For details go here: http://uboat.net/boats/u1206.htm .

Strange but true!

I just thought of this. Maybe the "crash dive of doom" bug (where you load a game & the boat sinks slowly until it reaches crush depth) is meant to model this and therefore, not a bug at all!

That's what happens when you get a clogged drain, and you send Bernard in to work on the plumming.

Haha, great story!

Apperantly, a specialist was needed to 'operate' the toilet. What a lousy job the guy must have, flushing toilets for other people!
(and you can imagine the hazards of being a toilet specialist )

Actually, some US Captains did the same on polar convoys when the lot got clobbered by U-Boats. There is even a documented account where one captain beached his ship near a small fishermen village and insisted the freight has been properly delivered to a russian port (so he insisted on being properly paid as per contract obligations).
