Projekt Messerwetzer pointless?

Hi all,

This is my first post to this forum, so let me give you some background first. My first subsim was a CD version of AoD back when I had a 486. That game was truly immersive - if you'll pardon the pun - and I'll never forget the time I was on the ocean floor, dead silent, trying to fool some escorts above in a late-war scenario. I heard their props churning for a while, and then it went quiet. Aha, I thought, fooled them. Nope. I was just getting ready to begin to move again when WHAM a depth charge went off and I nearly jumped out of my seat! That game was wonderul and I loved the interviews, too.

Fast forward to today. I play a lot of games in a variety of genres (but not shooters, which tend to bore me), and hadn't played a subsim in a while. Recently got the jones to do so again, and bought SH3 at bargain bin prices, only to find out about its dreaded starforce copy protection. Well, to be short, I've never installed that game ... I just don't trust it. So I hauled out a copy of SH2 that I had purchased years ago and had never opened ... it was still in the shrink wrap!

It installed flawlessly on my new Dell rig (with Vista Home), and then I discovered this forum and the fact that there were literally tons of mods for this game. Yay! So I started finding as many of them as I could in an attempt to load what a number of posters here have stated as a good mix of mods: the 1.1 patch, Vickers Oil Slick and Fireball, Fletcher's enhancements, the rainmod, Projekt Schwertfisch+PS SP2, etc.

But here's my question: is there really any point in adding PM 1.03 at this point in time? It seemed overwhelmingly aimed at multiplayer play, which I assume is deader than a door nail at this point in time what with SH3 and SH4 out there. I know that UbiSoft doesn't support this game on its servers anymore, so what's the point in adding it? I'm really looking forward to just an immersive - that word again! - solo situation trying to replicate all those great memories playing AoD.

Thoughts?

Hi and wellcome to subsim

PM was certainly biased towards multiplayer, yet it gave some extras worth consideirng for single playing: Manually controllable dive planes and secondary explosions. As far as the rest concerns, it's a 1.1 version of the game, so you won't be wrong installing it even if only for single gaming. You get extra stuff and nothing gets broken, so what else can you hope for ?

Happy hunting

PM1.03 is definately worth installing. I've never played multiplayer on SHII but always install PM whenever I reinstall SHII because it does add some nice features (such as the secondary explosions and manual diveplanes mentioned) and it also helps fix some bugs in the sim.

So go for it

Thanks for the recommendations, fellas; I installed PM 1.03, everything went okay, and we're off! It's great being back in those dangerous waters again.

As a tip to those who might be installing the SubSim Hi-Res kit, and are doing so on Vista, be sure to do the following:

1. Accept not only the Hi-Res (1024) checkbox but the PM fix as well *as long as you have installed the above PM 1.03*.

2. I found once 1024 was installed that I had to change the main program's executable (SH2.exe) to Win98 compatibility mode. Otherwise the cursor in the 3D screen became so hair-trigger I could barely use it. Setting the executable to Win98 compatibility made this problem go away.

As far as multiplayer goes, UBI's servers were never the place to play. Onkel Neal's other subsite, the Sub Club http://subclub.info/wpl/ with it's Wolfpack League and Eagle Leage was the place to be. We had some great times there. These days they're doing SH3, and I'm not interested in co-op games, but there are still some interesting people who only hang out there.

Probably the most fun I had with SH2 was using PM and a LAN connection to a friend with Destroyer Command. If you can find a copy of DC and have a friend, give it a try. I'm still hoping for a new version of DC.
