Witnessed something I don't get to see very often. I was on patrol in the Bismarck Sea when radar picked up a lone contact. As I manoeuvred into position ahead of the contact's heading, SJ radar picked up a "very fast" contact ie an airborne contact. Thinking it was a Jap air patrol, I was debating whether to dive.
As the contact sailed close enough for me to establish visual contact, I noticed some explosions. I couldn't resist and used the camera view and found out that the air contact was a PBY-5 attacking the merchant. Unfortunately the merchant sank before I could get into position to attack, but it was a cool thing to watch nonetheless.
