Default SH3 Commander/GWX 2.1 (German) incompatability?

Sehr geehrte Kaleune!

I have used the magic button, as advised by OLC in another thread, but to no avail.

I have occasionally seen similar queries to this problem, but am yet to find an answer.

The problem is this:

My GWX 2.1 (German language option) with OLC UberMod works fine without SH3 Commander: with SH3 Commander added (latest and penultimate versions, though not the earlier ones), however, the German menu changes, Memel disappears from the navigation map, though its U-boot flottilla is present, and, when starting a new carreer, one is transported to the South Atlantic off the Gold Coast seaboard or thereabouts.

I have added the GWX 2.1 bug mod: still no Memel and still the mysterious transportation to the shores of Africa.

The change in German language words is no problem; some words are replaced with synonyms, e.g. Laufbahn for Karriere: the other problems are BIG!

I can play without SH3 Commander and do so with great satisfaction. However, such gameplay precludes my using OLC GUI 1.2.3., which, in my opinion, reduces the reality factor.

I should be most grateful for any sugestions that may enable me to solve this most irritating problem.

Viele Grüße aus Moskau!

Hmm, that's odd. A basic search using just "Memel" found me everything I needed to know. Try it.

C'mon, admit it, you didn't search first did you? From the 2.1 bugfix thread: "Fixed error in Ge menu where had Memel listed in line 765 instead of Koenigsberg".

In other words, Memel was never meant to be there in the first place; it's a typo. Fixed in the bugfix and OLC Ubermod. Ironically, it was not fixed in SH3Cmdr, because (you can see where I am heading here)...SH3Cmdr has nothing to do with it.

If you have a career started in Memel pre the GWX 2.1 bug fix, it will no longer work post the bug fix, or with the OLC Ubermod installed.

But this is only one part of your problem...

...And here is the main part of your problem, which is not a GWX 2.1 / SH3Cmdr compatibility issue at all, but a GWX 2.1 / OLC GUI 1.2.3 incompatibility. The latter is NOT compatible with GWX 2.1 careers that are started in Koenigsberg. I'm not sure if OLC GUI 1.2.3 is otherwise compatible with GWX 2.1, but it does not include the Koenigsberg base that was added to GWX 2.1. You need to add it - 765=Königsberg.

But as you started your career pre the GWX 2.1 bug fix, it will still not work (as I mentioned above).

I'll leave this one for you to take up with OLC and/or the GWX team.

But I did check Memel and Königsberg in search and the information there only confirmed what I had done previously; I used the fix mod included in the GWX 2.1 fixbug mod for the Kiel Canal locks and, having installed the fixbug mod, I expected Königsberg to appear on my charts in place of Memel: it didn't.

What search has not indicated to me is that there may be an incompatibility between GWX 2.1 and OLC GUI 1.2.3. OLC in his instructions on the use of Ubermod says that there is an option when choosing Ubermod environment and GUI: I always choose to use the latest Ubermod and GUI 1.2.3.

I did not start a career in Memel. I started in Wilhemshaven, August 1939. I then added SH3 Commander 3.1: everything ran fine. Then I decided to launch another career starting from Memel/Königsberg, but neither places were indicated on the map, although the flotilla was there. So I closed down and deleted SH3 Commander to see if there were any noticable effects after having done so. I also deleted my SH3 file in the My Documents folder and deleted my previous shortlived careers in SH3/GWX 2.1.

Memel/Königsberg had not reappeared when I launched a new career once again from Wilhelmshaven only to find myself, after "Noch nicht lange her ..." had faded away, off the blistering shores of the White Man's Graveyard.

This is what OLC writes in his read me for Ubermod OLCE2:

OLC Ubermod is JSGME ready. You can enable either OLCE2 on its own, or both OLCE2 and OLC GUI Special, but you should not enable OLC GUI Special on its own. If you want to play OLC GUI without OLCE2 then you should download OLC GUI 1.2.3...

I should prefer to play OLCE2 with GUI 1.2.3 on GWX 2.1 with SH3 Commander 3. It might be that this combination is just not possible. If that is the case, then I would choose OLCE2 with SH3 Commander on GWX 2.1 and to hell with the manual targetting or use stock SH3 manual targetting.

I shall do yet another complete re-installation and see what happens. I hope that the fault only lies in the possibility that I had not installed the fixbug mod correctly.

PS

As regards my confusion about whether GUI 1.2.3 can be used with OLCE2, although I have not found a statement in OLC's mailings that the two aforementioned mods are incompatible, neither have I found a statement that these mods are compatible. However, I have had it at the back of my mind for some time now that I have seen written somewhere that these mods are indeed compatible.

I have just found out where: in Schwuppes's signature, where it is stated:

SH3 + GWX2.1 + OLC GUI 1.2.3, + OLCE2 @ 88% Realism.

And that's the set up I should like, together with SH3 Commander 3.

But I cannot get it up and running!

I've tinkered a lot with the different OLC GUI mods in the last few days, and as far as I can see OLC GUI 1.2.3 is not compatible with GWX 2.1 + 2.1 Bugfix. The one file that makes it uncompatible is de_menu.txt because that file from OLC 1.2.3 does not have 765=Königsberg. The line has been added in the OLC Ubermod which makes it compatible. There are also a lot of other differences in the de_menu.txt from 1.2.3 and GWX 2.1 + Bugfix but they are mostly cosmetic.

If I were you I would either copy the de_menu file from Ubermod to 1.2.3 or change the lines which are different manualy.

Thanks Henry! You've just confirmed what I've been suspecting for some while now: it's an incompatability in the German language option that is screwing things up.

I too have been trying different permutations and combinations with the GUI and Ubermod environment mods this evening and the common factor to the bugs that I have been experiencing is that the glitches appear when I play in German, which option is my preferred one.

I noticed this incomptability weeks ago as soon I saw the differences in the German main menus with and without OLC environment mods + OLC GUI/SH3 Commander.

Following Henri II's advice, I overwrote de menu in OLC GUI 123 with Ubermod de menu.

The system is now up and running - partly.

For some reason or other there are no water streams spilling from my U-boat outer hull. This is very likely because of the order that I have added the mods, a point that I often find to be crucial. I assumed that the water streaming mod had been incorporated in OLCE2 as it had been to an earlier Ubermod. I need to check the appropriate mod read me files once again.

I shall reinstall the mods after checking search as regards information concerning order of mod installation...

... Found it! OLC's note that the water stream mod has been removed from OLCE2, that is.

Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa! I had clearly only skimmed through the read me of OLCE2.

A simple bit of jiggerypokery with the mod installation back at Wilhlmshaven should sort things out and there will, hopefully, be no need for a reinstallation. I shall scuttle off there right away because a nosey eco MTB has just let off a few rounds at me and caused minor damage and I've already got a few coaster scalps under my belt.

Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find: knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth: and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

Matthew 7:7,8

(Well, it is Sunday! And the above is a good sentiment and certainly applies to this forum.)

I'll release OLC GUI 1.2.4 with fixed menu.txt files.
