Cannot be done is what I've heard because independent engine functionality is not modelled in the game

As I recall, the errant Racerboy did indeed discover that there were seperate telegraphs for the port and starboard engines that were modeled and textured but I do not remember if he ever found the actual code sections that would switch on implementation in the game.
He was in the middle of a huge project that would rework the engine controls and add many other unimplemented u-boat features before he so suddenly disappeared into the ether.
