Default Totally suprised

I'm playing 1.4, and after getting tired of tooling around Singapore-Japan shipping lanes, I decided to just plunk myself down in a likely area and sit there.

After a day, I almost jumped out of my chair when a sign came up "Submarine sighted!"

Not sure how to react, I switched to silent running and down to periscope depth. With the sonar I was able to close range and catch sight of the sub. I couldn't find anything in the recognition manual so I had the watch officer ID it for me (I'm on TMO and RSRD). It was "German U-Boat."

I took some quick readings and sent to electric eels his way. First one missed but the second one made pretty fireworks. The ship was worth 1800 tons. Unfortunately, it didn't sink. However that did give me a chance to tool up close to the thing and take pictures (I'm playing w/out ext. camera).

Suspicious that it was just a prop, I loaded up the save I made and engaged the the ship on the surface. I was pleased to find him firing back at me. My twin-deck gunned Narwhal made quick work. Although, it seemed like every shot that hit him set off a bucket of fireworks, perhaps I need to turn back on NSM4.

Anyway, has anybody else experienced this? Is is a stock feature or thanks to Ducimus' mod?

Also, is it actually possible for AI submarines to behave at all appropriately? Like with them diving and launching torpedos? If not in stock, what about w/ the u-boat add-on or mods. Is such a thing just outside the scope of the hardcode?

Never had that happen. I've seen Japanese Subs docked in ports, but you can throw everything you have at it and they wont sink.

Not sure about them all, but back right after the game first released several people found the Sen Toku class boats tied up to a few docks and were unable to make them sink. The subs are only modeled for ports so it's entirely possible that they were never enabled to sink in the game.

I do recall that in Grey Wolves for SH3, they were able to add in AI boats, but could not make them change depth. They either ran surfaced the entire time and could not submerge, or ran submerged the entire time and could not surface. I expect it's a game limitation rather than a mod issue.

I imagined as much. Heh, the AI boats have enough trouble operating in two dimensions. Don't confuse them by making them worry about up and down!

So true. I was on my second patrol since buying the game and decided Tokyo harbour would be a fun place to go. There sat some Japanese sub AND it had a scout plane on it. I was totally shocked at it.

Then it bounced my torps.

It was a sad day for Aur0ra145.

I think but do not quote me, RSRD put the uboat in. Again, I could be wrong. Either way, I do not think this is stock at all.

I have not had this happen yet in SH4 but in GWX I submerged and heard the props on my sonar....talk about knocking my socks off because GWX brilliantly created this and the fact that I was not going to hang out to see who it was. It created a pucker factor as Kpt Lehman puts it. :rotfl: I slinked off in the depths.

I with you on that AVG. It may not be the perfect u-boat simulation wise, but the just experience and "pucker" of coming across an enemy sub while surfaced on crystal smooth water was enough to pull me into the experience.

Might I suggest you find a book on the USS Batfish? The submarine submarine killer! Three Japanese subs sunk in three nights. The accounts are hair raising as the dark night left only the radar to do the tracking and not visually seeing the sub until they were on top of it. Scaring stuff to be sure and definitely cat and mouse. I certainly would be filling my shorts if I were on that bridge knowing the enemy is just but a 1000 yards off and you do not know if he is setting up his torpedoes to do you in.

LCDR John Fyfe was a real baddie. I rank him up there with John Wayne. He had the right stuff and retired as a two-star.
