WHen you head out on a war patrol, its gives you an erea to patrol (marked by binoculars)
Usually, I just ignore it and go my own way (not including supply/raid/etc mission). Is there a penalty for not going to the designated area, or a bonus for doing so? |

Every objective you complete gets you renown. I think it's still 500 base renown, modified by your realism percentage. Back in SH3, the formula was you got a percentage of the total renown earned during the patrol equal to .75 times your realism setting plus .25, thus you'd get 25% of the renown if you were running 0% realism, 100% renown if running 100% realism, and something in between if you had some on and some off. I don't know if that formula still holds true in SH4.
I've been assuming it's still 500 renown per objective you complete, and I've done as many as 9 objectives in one patrol, so that adds up to quite a lot of renown you might be skipping. I prefer to do an objective, radio in and get another, and repeat until I either run low on fuel or torpedoes. Sometimes if I'm close to a tender or base, I'll refit to refuel but I don't keep going in for more torps and going back out.

It would be nice if we could implement the patrol grids that the Navy used back then. They weren't uniform squares like the Kriegsmarine grid.

You also run the risk of getting the dreaded repeat missions loop where HQ determins you are not fufilling your objectives and sends you on the same mission again and again. You also risk early retirement which might prevent you from being able to experience all the sub models and all their enhancements as well as not being able to participate through the end of the war. Once you have fufilled the initial objective and you see it checked off on the message window, you can roam freely at will if you don't radio in.
I still suggest radio in when your torps are empty and ready to go back. HQ will then instruct you to RTB. This guarentees you'll get properly rewarded for the effort you put in. -Pv- |

I always complete the objective as quickly as possible, and them go marauding where I please, without radioing in until,as has been said,my torps are all gone.

Im currently in the planning stage of making shipping lane charts for Run Silent Run Deep campaign. These could very easily include patrol grids, but i dont have the original patrol grids. I have those that were on the Valor at Sea website, but i don't know if those are correct compared to real life grids. |

I remember someone posting original pictures of patrol grids on this board months ago. I don't remember who it was. Lurker, maybe, since he's the campaign guru.

You could make any number of patrol zones to place patrol stars for your campaign and probably be pretty close. SH1 had a real WW II skipper as a consultant when SSI made the game which is nice. Art |

LCDR "Bud" Gruner of the USS Skate (SS-305). I thought SSI did an excellent job on that game.
Someone is still trying to make a profit from it... http://www.cdaccess.com/html/pc/silenth.htm

In 1.5 + TMO + RSRDC you can see the original patrol area names marked on the map( "Convoy College" etc) when using certain zoom levels. I'm not sure which of those adds them, but my bet is on RSRDC.

I just found the Commander's Edition starting from $29.85 and still holding its value. If we could combine the best of SH4 and SHCE wouldn't that be nice. That is what I would like to do using my meagre modding abilities. Big learning curve ahead though.... lol Happy Hunting! Art |

Yeah, I really liked the movies that they made with him narrating. I especially liked the rantings of an old man about certain issues that bothered him as a skipper, like the DO and helmsmen not doing a very good job of maintaining the right depth.
