Default torpedo loadouts and milk cows

when putting in at a milk cow or other base, is there anyway i can edit something to keep my torpedo loadout?

it's possible to change the default loadout and the loadout for single missions, so there should be a way to make the game give me X torpedo in X tube and have X missing torpedoes, right?

anyone know where this file's located and what to change?

thanks

Unfortunately the game treats a milk cow as a dock at a base
Milk cows are a modded extra and were missing from the original
So the game will give you a full load of torp in line with the basic cfg for that sub that date

AFAIK no one has ever managed to trick the game into giving you less torps than a full load

you know how some single missions have altered loadouts-

in the training missions you have no torpedoes, etc.

so is there no way to temporarily change the basic config to give you the certain number and kind of torps?

Not sure about the training missions as never played them but single missions again take the torp info from the basic cfg
If you choose a 44 uboat in a 41 mission then you should get the 44 loadout
IIRC that is
So its not that the mission alters the torp loadout but you do depending on the year boat you select

The full torp load from a milk cow has always been a bone of contention
In RL you would be lucky to get half a dozen and whatever fuel you could get in a limited time frame
But as the devs dropped the milk cows along with wolfpacks in the final run up to release the current work around is all we have within the game engine limits

sorry if i'm being a bit slow-

but why can't i go into the basic file and change the loadout of the year of the boat i have to what i want- maybe one or two extra torpedoes and whatever i had when i came?

after backing up, can't one simply write in what one wants for the correct year of boat, and then the next time the game starts, the new loadout is the "default" and is what i start with?

then after i leave the milkcow and save, i go in and revert to the original.

You can certainly try it
But SH3 doesnt take too kindly to file changes mid patrol
You can make the changes after docking at the milkcow after exiting
And revert back to your original cfg after docking at home port

Though if you are planning on changing your loadout before sailing from home every time you may just as well alter the basic cfg to reflect that anyway so none of the messing around

TBH not tried editing the basic while on the move at sea

As BB has suggested...try it when docked in base

IIRC, in real life milk cows carried only 4 torpedos in pressurized cannisters between their pressure hull and deck. So, getting 1 or 2 torpedos would have been a treat. Milk cows provided mostly fuel, food, spare parts, medical care and some times replacement crew.

Most additional torps came from meeting u-boats at sea that were returning to port with left overs. The torpedos had to be floated between u-boats. I read a book: Teddy Suhren, Ace of Aces: Memoirs of a U-boat Rebel which gives a pretty good discription of how this was accomplished.

Suggestion on reducing torpedos at Milk Cow: restart the game at the Milk Cow as usual and then fire all extra torps until you get the load you believe is realistic. And then begin your patrol.

I was going to suggest the same thing.
Just roll a dice and get rid of the "extra" eels
