Rookie needs training

[B][I]I hope this is the right forum to post to: I have recently purchased SH4 WOTP, it plays fine on my PC, but I have absolutely no idea how to play this game. I can't even get myself through submarine school. Is there a walkthrough or something that I can use to learn this game. When I go to the Nav Map, I can see the flag I'm supposed to nav to but I can't see myself. This game looks like great fun but HELP!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!

You should go through submarine school first. That will walk you through the basics of commanding your sub.

Default Welcome ttstag!

To the wonderful world of submarine simulation, where you get dropped on your head in the middle of the war zone and don't know a thing. The learning curve is vertical. The manual was written before the game was released, so it is often irrelevent. I use mine under the short leg of my desk.

The answers are here, don't worry. I'm off to work but will check back to see what's been posted and leave whatever sarcastic remarks seem right at the time.:rotfl:

I actually pulled the manual out. Page 59 has the symbols on your nav map. The circle symbol with the velocity vector is you. Pressing ctrl-left click will center the view on your sub. That's it for starters, I'm off!

It's a hard game, but with a little patience you'll get the hang of it. You got your name from being new on the forum with only 3 posts.

Thanks for the encouragement. Happy Hunting. I'm at work right now but I'll be back at school as soon as I get home. I'll let you know if I make any progress

Default Quick answers

A couple quick answers for you:

The box icon with the compass (not the compass that shows you directions, but the one that you used in geometry class to draw circles) shows you a map. Click on it.

You should be centered on the map. You may need to zoom in or out to get your bearings on where you are in the world. You are the circle with the little tail. The tail points to the back of your boat. That is to say, the direction you came from.

There are three large guages on the lower right part of the screen:

The first one controls your speed. 1/3, 2/3, Standard, etc. Click on one of them to move your sub. Clicking on the left half of the guage moves you backward at the selected speed and clicking on the right half of the guage moves you forward at the selected speed.

The middle guage controls the direction of your sub. Your current heading is at the top. So, if the "S" is right at the top of the guage, you're heading "S"outh. Click on any location at the outer rim of the guage and your sub will start to make a turn in that direction. Of course, to turn you must be moving, so make sure you are at least at 1/3 speed.

The final guage controls your depth. Click anywhere around the outer rim of this guage and your sub will dive or rise to that depth. Be careful though - your sub has a "crush depth" below which your sub will implode and sink. If you have patched your game up to the current version, the depth guage should have a red needle. That's your crush depth. Go below it at your own peril, and if you do go below it, don't stay there long!

Hope this helps!

Welcome aboard Bilge Rat

Dont feel bad man. I have been playing subsims since SH2 and Im pretty lost with this one myself. Just tried a mission with manual targeting and I gotta tell ya, I cant hit the broad side of a battleship.... literally (just got SH4 recently)

Keep pluggin away, ask questions here and you'll eventually be the terror of the high sea's. This has always been a great community full of very helpfull people so dont be afraid to ask.

Just dont ask me, when the IJN see's me comming they roll out the hot tea and sushi cause they know Im no threat.
