Default Newbie help

Hi. I am pretty new to SH3, and am looking for updates to the stock game. I've looked through some of the sticky threads, and am still a bit confused. I've also tried searching the forums, but a lot of the download links I've tried don't seem to work any more.
My Notepad doesn't run the stock game that quickly, so I'm probably not looking at intensive graphics mods.
- What is the difference between the GWX2 and NYGM patches ?
- I saw a tutorial on YouTube about realistic navigation, and would like to give this a go - is there a game option or patch which stops the game showing your position automatically on the Nav Map ?
Any advice would be much appreciated.

While better graphics cards help the games performance, you can get by with a fairly modest card; in my experiences adding more RAM gives the biggest improvement for a single component. Though if you're using an older notebook that uses IDE discs instead of a sata one IO access becomes a nasty bottleneck.

The NYGM is a good mod that enhances the vanilla version of the game (stock), would be a good alternative if your notebook chokes hard with GWX. GWX is like crack, once you play it you're hooked and there's no going back. It's tenfold more realistic and historically correct than anything else. There's dozens of things you'll see (like Battleships and Carriers) that almost never pop up in the stock game.

Thanks for the advice. I only have 1Mb RAM at the moment, and upgarding to 2Mb is pretty cheap, so I might try that.
Anyone have any suggestions about removing the automatic positioning on the nav map ?
Cheers

Getting the RAM upgrade should make a noticeable difference. With respect to the nav map do you mean removing your boat from the map entirely so that it would be done manually (like with an astrolabe or using the stars to find your position)?

Yep, that was what I was hoping. The idea is that you use Ctrl-Click to give you your current position (only when the sun is visible, to 'simulate' getting a fix using a sextant), at various times during the day, and work your navigation from this.
I've looked in the 'realism' options, and can't see an option, and haven't been able to igure out which patch would stop your position being shown in real time.
