I just built a Vista rig for my brother. I've never seen Vista before yesterday so bear with me.
I want to do multiple installs of SH4 on his rig so I can have stock, Trigger Maru and Real Fleet Boat available for use without him having to mess around. But every time I try to do a second install the software finds the first one and won't let me make a second install. In XP this was easy. In Vista I'm clueless. Help appreciated |

Try just making a copy of the Installation Folder and renaming it. That's what I did when I got the U-boat Expansion.
My C:\Program Files\Ubisoft directory looks like (C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter 4 Wolves of the Pacific) & (C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter 4 Wolves of the Pacific v1.4) All I Do is if I want to play SH4 1.4 is rename the folder I got the U-boat expansion in and then rename the Sh4 1.4 directory to the default name. |

I would suggest that you copy over your 1.4 game folder to another location and rename if you want, just so you can keep track of which version is which. I put my Copy on a different drive (a partition, actually...D:\).
Then totally Uninstall your original installed version. Here's a very detailed step-by-step procedure to do that. You'll then be able to re-install your SH4 1.4 from the original DVD. http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=133290 Once that is done, you can run either version as you see fit, Modding each differently as you see fit. The only hiccup is that all saved missions will go into the same "Documents\SH4" folder so to keep things straight, Saved missions/files should be named by you using any system to identify which version of the Game they were saved under... (There is a MultiSH4 Application to set up separate "Documents\SH4" folders for each SH4 version, but I do not use it...Do a search and you'll find it). Good Luck. P.S. With VISTA, do not install programs into the "C:\Program Files" folder...Vista makes writing to files in that folder difficult/impossible. It can be done running as Adminstrator, but the simpler way that most folks follow is to create a folder such as C:\MyGames and install there all games and other programs to which you will need to write to files.

Thanks for the responses. I did a search and destroy on the registry and also on any trace of the stock install and the DVD still knows I've got a copy of the game on the computer under Vista.
The only reference in the registry left is for the version I have stuck off in a corner under a completely different file path (I dont have the words Ubisoft, Silent Hunter, Wolves, Pacific or anything in the path...) But that registry entry refers to the exe as Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific which is the same name the setup.cfg on the DVD looks for. I think this is the source of my problem but the only solution for that is a disk image and manual edit of setup.cfg which I don't feel like trying tonite at least. |

Did you specifically follow my suggested (and tried and true) Uninstall/Re-install procedure to which I linked? A search and destroy and/or other Registry Cleaner will often NOT do the job...for whatever unknown reason. My suggested manual registry line/file/key deletion(s) Will Work.

You don't need to try to reinstall the game after the initial install.
Just copy everything in the "Silent Hunter wolves of the Pacific" folder into another folder that you create (i.e. Trigger Maru or RFB), for the total number of installs that you want to have. Then put the newest version of MultiSH4 into each of these game folders and create your game save folders. (i.e. one could be STK, one could be TMO, and one could be RFB). You are ready to install JSGME in each game folder and then install your mods. With Vista, as has been said before, DO NOT install the game into the Program Files folder.
