Default Bearing and Me....

....I really hate bearing, I can find the speed and distance just fine of a target, but somehow I always screw up the bearing. Is there an accurate way to find it? Because I watched many manual TDC videos and everyone just seems to click it right into place while I'm checking my attack map every two seconds to try and hopefully guess my solution. So could some nice soul give me a few pointers on how to properly find bearing without just guessing? Or is it all just guess work and I suck at it?

What you are referring to as "bearing" is really AOB or Angle on Bow. When you do a speed calculation your crew will give you the true course of the target from North. After you get this value, you must turn your AOB circle (upper right) so that the true course of the ship in your TDC (upper left) are the same.
What this does, is set the true course of the ship in your TDC, which knows your true course and then you get the AOB. So, again, what you are reffering to as bearing, is actually angle on bow, NOT bearing!

Im sorry, I guess I really need to remember what I'm talking about . Ok, I'll give that a try in the morning, I don't really know why this concept seems so complicated to me.

Also, lots of patience. The fact being that not all contacts that you run across are going to offer a "good" target. The beauty of the sim is not the ability to sink ships although that is the directive. The beauty is in working up the contact with the tools provided by the Fleet Boat.

I try to arrive at a pretty solid speed and course for the target, then setup the boat for the "best" shot possible taking into account weather, seas, light and threats. Once there you can gather more data confirm with the scope or even better with radar, refine the target solution and then setup the shot.

Tactically the shot also brings about many factors, how many torpedos to use, if its a convoy can you exploit a good overlap and send out fish at varying speeds...and on and on...

This is what I enjoy about the sim.....oh and if you really want things to get interesting try hyrdophone only attacks with ping for range, that is a lot of fun.

Well I ramble, and like I posted above when you fire the fish, that is almost anticlimactic...because a lot of times what you hear is "torpedo is a dud sir", yes its a dud but you still hit the target didn't you.....

Happy Hunting guys as you can see this sim has me hooked!

Is this hydrophone-only attack method a death sentence if there is an escort with sonar nearby? My initial gut reaction would be to never use sonar to ping for distance if there's a sonar-equipped warship near.

And speaking of dumb hydrophone operators.....why is it that my hydrophone operator won't pickup a target on the hydrophones until I actually manually tune the hydrophone and pickup the target myself. As soon as I do that, he starts yapping like crazy and will then track the target without difficulty. Is this affected by the realism setting? I'm on 100% realism.

I remember seeing in another thread that a sub pinging is not detected by ASW in this sim.
