Default Changing mast height a way to fool subs?

Since the u-boats used the mast height to determine distance, altering the height of the mast seems like a easy way to fool them.

Did that ever occur in real life?

The Japanese were known to alter the mast heights just for that reason. I don't know if the British ever did.

I know warships used deception to avoid accurate detection. Things like adding another funnel or making changes to the superstructure. Convoiraiders were often disguised as known merchants to be able to close on enemy shipping. But with merchants in general... dunno...

Changing mast heights to fool submarines?

Dashed unsporting, what, what!

only a bounder or cad would do that.

After all remember the British Admiralty refused to use submarines at first because it was considered unfair.

Soon changed their tune, mind you, once everybody else had them.
