Now, if you can, name the author, title, and characters from which this bit of dialogue originates.

Sounds like some Patrick O'Brian Aubrey/Maturin dialogue from one of the early books maybe Post Captain or HMS Surprise? Just reread them recently, a fantastic series indeed.

Patrick O'Brian was one of the biggest charlatans of maritime literature. He was always very evasive when being interviewed in case anybody discovered this and inquired too deeply into his fictional past.
I prefer Marryat myself. He was a friend of Dickens and a retired naval officer who wrote some excellent books on life at sea. ![]() |

Linton, I think I love you.
Forester fan, myself.

Yes, there is an amazing disparity between the way O'Brian writes, the way his characters behave and how he himself behaved.
I like C.S. Forester too, such a shame they killed off the multi emmy winning hugely popular TV series based on the books and replaced it with "Dog the Bounty Hunter" stupid, stupid A&E. What a wasted opportunity. There was talk of continuing with a new partner but I think it all fell through. All of the carefully stored props were sadly sold off a few months ago. There was also rumors of a sequel to the Master & Commander movie but nothing has come of it yet and with the length of time now it's probably not likely. Whilst I liked the film the books are quite a bit more involved and the film characters, particularly Maturin seemed off. The best interpretation I have found of the books are the Borders unabridged audio series narrated by Patrick Tull. Those are fantastic and really bring the books to life. An English actor he is great at doing all of the required accents from the loftiest admiral to the most insignificant holystoner and his comedic timing is perfect, highly recommended.
