Transfering Flotillas - Advice requested

I am curious about transfering flotillas since I haven't done it in a while. It is January 1941 and I am still in command of U-11, based in Kiel with the 1st Flotilla. However, I would like to take command of a IXC U-boat and transfer to the 2nd Flotilla in Lorient. Do I request a transfer to the 2nd BEFORE leaving for my next patrol and then once I patrol my assigned grid, head for Lorient? OR... Do I leave on my next patrol, head to Lorient and THEN request a transfer? I am asking in advance because, with my IIA, just going from Lorient to Kiel will be a strain on my fuel.
