Mark 10 Torpedoes

Did these torpedoes have a gyro angle that could be set, or did the captain have to maneuver the boat into the correct position in order to fire the torpoedoes in the correct direction?

Apparently the first American torpedo to have an adjustable fire control was the Mk 7 of 1911. The Mk 14 was the first US torpedo to have electrical settings, which I assume means that it was the first to have the settings directly adjusted from the control room. Earlier fish had to be adjusted at the tube, as witnessed in one scene from the long version of Das Boot. Of course now I'm wondering about that scene, as I suspect the Germans also had electrical adjusters by that time.

Yes it does. Aim's like the Mark 14 and can even be fired in the same spread with the Mark 14 if your in a jam. It's most effective though if fired in pairs because it has a smaller warhead (500lbs) than the mark 14 (?900lbs?), but the mk10 is much more reliable. Thats why I always swap out half of my Mark 14s for Mark 10s before each patrol.

If you are going for the element of supprise you want to fire the Mark 10s first they run slower than the Mark 14s on fast speed setting. But the most effective way if you are using the Mk14s in combo with the Mark 10s is to fire the the mark 14s set on slow apeed and just ahead of the Mk10s that way they get to the target about the same time.

The mark 14 at 1000yrds will get there in just under 60sec (approx 31kts) on slow speed and just under 40sec (approx 46kts) on fast setting. 4500yds range on fast, and 9000yds on slow.

The Mark 10s run at one speed 36kts and have a range of 3500yds.

hope that helps
