Default Range and AoB finder: AoB greater than 90, now what?

So i'm training with these new (to me) instruments in the excelent OLC mod in GWX 2.0, 100% realism. Oh, 89% realism, i do have contacts on because i'm training. I wanted to get a notion of how accurate these instruments really are. So in the training mission "torpedos" (same as in the OLC video tutorial) i first the tanker sailing at 345 true bearing when you start the mission. Range is about 1800 meters to me but the AOB was greater than 90, since there is no angle scale for angles greater than 90 i assumed the ship was sailing east (note i started heading north and i'm dead in the water at periscope). I thought i hada good solution and i raised periscope once more to check how good was my reading. Not so good, i was 200 meters off. I was a bit worried if i would be able to play 100% realism and after a close observation i realized that ship wasn't going exactly east (not 90º AoB) so my two questions are:

How to find out the Aob in such cases you go "off the scale"?
What is the minimum range you'd recommend one can make a solution worthy of the TDC?

Thx

I can add pics if this sounds confusing. I didn't pay much attention into choosing words

If the AOB is greater than 90, i.e. the target is moving away from you, then the presented aob is:

180- the generated AOB off the AOB finder

SO if it shows 45 and it is heading away from you

AOB = 180-45=135

You shoot if you think you'll hit, or else you try to ovetake the target, or you surface and use the deckgun or else you give up if none of those options are possible

wait, i think what you are saying is that the measurement of the AOB was off the scale, and not that the target was moving away from you.

In this case you have made a measurement error. The error is either because you inaccurately measured, or because you have the wrong magnification, or because the intel in the recog manual is incorrect. If the latter, it sucks for a kaleun, doesn't it? Still easier than in reality though. I think they generally had to guess the dimensions of merchants.

The good news is that chances are the AOB is between 60 and 120. The torpedo solution for these AOBs does not vary much in this range. if you are in a firing position, your should be accurate enough to hit with an inputted AOB of 90.

Thank you for your reply. Your guess was also accurate, that's the problem exactly, it's not a whole lot over 90, just a bit but it is..
Other than i should be at a 90 angle, i'm not sure what is an ideal firing position (rangewise). Just to be sure about the possibility i'm not screwing the measurement up, please, if you have GWX 2.0 and OLC mod (for 2.0 of course) installed, check the medium cargo merchant ship for.

Another note: on the map thisship seemed almost at a 90 degree angle but slightly over that meaning less than 90, something around 85 i think which makes it moving away from me... i seem to get a pretty inaccurate range depending on what you think is an accurate range (+-100 meters at around 1800 meters) although i spent alot of tries (on the same mission to make sure the starting conditions were the same) lining up the scope to the water mark and counting very carefully the vertical marks. Another problem were which is basically a magnification problem (discuss) is you can basically only tell full marks and maybe half marks. I don't know what kinds of errors this translate to but i still love the mod, think it's the best GUI for GWX 2.0 and mos def the most realistic one.

That medium cargo in the torpedo training mission initially goes on course 66 degrees. So with a true bearing of 345 an AOB around 90-100 (moving away) does look right.
