I have a question about the dud torpedo setting in SH4. Do the duds just fail to explode, or do they exhibit the other problems like running deep and sometimes chasing their tail?
In my quest to ramp up the realism as I climb the learning curve, duds will be the next setting I tackle.

I think the Dud Torpedoes setting in the menu covers all sorts of torpedo malfunctions, such as depth keeping problems, duds, circle runners etc. All of those are eliminated if the setting is off, and introduced when it's on.

I've had many prematurely detonate. Probably more than any other malfunction, that was the big one for myself.
