Hello all!
I just jumped to SH4 a couple of days ago and tonight I ran onto my first convoy (a very large one)! I went past the escorts and fired 4 torps. 3 Of them hit and I got 1 kill and 1 wounded merchant. I dived to aprox. 50 meters and waited for the escorts to begin hunting me and so they did for about 10 minutes with no effect. After I waited a little longer I went to PD to take a look and to my suprise I saw allmost all the merchants stoped (or moving real slow). Also 3 of the escorts (cruisers) were dead stopped and searching with their lights. I searched the posts here and saw that this was an issue prior to patch 1.3. I run the game with patch 1.4 that I installed on top of 1.3. Does anyone now if this behavior is normal or should I have installed 1.4 without 1.3 before? Never mind.... it seems that I was quick to ask ![]() Thanks prologos Last edited by prologos; 02-13-08 at 01:49 AM. |

Well, last time I was also running into a convoy. I was able to get very near, and launch 3 torpedo's. I could hit all of them on a destroyer. He continued, and went looking for me with 2 other destroyers. They were looking in every way for me, dumping depth-charges sometimes a half mile from were I was. But they could still follow me in some way. I was heading to the west, they went to the west, and when I changed course to the south or east, they were following me, but never could find me really. And I was running silent for almost 5 houres.
My torpedo-tubes were damaged when 1 depth-charge exploded near my sub, so I couldn't get them off me. Really weird, because they were following me that long without anny succes. Is it actually an issue that AI ships don't give up that fast? It was really weird to see them following me, but didn't really have much succes. |

Well I'm pretty certain that I've read of actual confrontations where IJN DD's have been looking for US subs for as much as up to a full day. So realistically I believe it's not far fetched to be looking for a submarine for 5 hours really.

DD's looking for you for a long time is quite good in my opinion. It makes the game more challlenging. But for the rest of the convoy to stop (even if they were waiting for a ship to repair) stroke me as very odd! The british never did that in SH3!

Well, I also think it is a good thing that they keep searching. But they were all wrong with releasing the depth-charges, releasing them hundreds of meters away from me all the time, and still keep on following me.
They seem to have the slightest idea of where I am, but they aren't sure. Also, is the distraction sonar really effective? I released a couple of them, followed another course, released another one, and got back on course. But the destroyers don't seem to notice them. The flares on a airplane are something simular, but more for attacks. Thgis sonar is more to mislead your opponant. But the AI seems to be pretty clever here. Also, if somebody has some good tips for sneaking to a enemy without getting spotted, then I am really glad to hear it. |

Most of the time they stop so that the escort DDs can get a fix on you without too much backdround signals from their own ships. Makes sense to me. One nutty sailor I spoke to said they stop hoping you can fire a torp so the rest can see where you are.
