As some of you may know, I'm working on a Cold War mod. For now, the emphasis has been on 1950s and early 1960s submarines because their systems aren't too far in advance of what was available in the 1940's. My question, however, is can more modern fire control systems be integrated into SH4?
For sonar, the requirements are a system that can get a target's bearing and relatively accurate range (i.e. 6000yds instead of medium range) and thus build a target plot, but most importantly it needs to be able to identify the target without periscope observation. Once that's accomplished, we need the identification and target plot data to go to the TDC. I know SH4 has an automatic aiming function, could it be used for this purpose? Would it also be possible to put active sonar on torpedoes? |

Dont know about the targetting side - but the cutie uses a hydrophone - so replacing that sensor with active - or adding another node to get the passive/active combo should work. As it is - the existing cutie does work with passive - as many a sunk subsimmer can attest to.
You do realize that your not going to get wire guidance, right? Good luck - and feel free to use my Nuke Boat mod for a start on the sub performances if you would like. You will want to change out the armor stats though.

Yeah, I know wire guidance is out of the question. I suppose passive homing can work, too; the Russians had 23kt passive-homing heavyweight torpedoes that were in widespread use in the late 50s through the 70s (maybe other variants are still in use today).
I also think proper homing torpedoes could be a decent stop-gap measure for the targeting issue; so long as you are on an intercept course, the torps should take out the target even without a firing solution (the only problem is finding out if your shooting at a friendly before the fish are launched). |
