Questions on Maps, Logs, and Patrols

Here's a few random questions:

1. Is there any way to get more detailed maps of the game world? Sometimes I have a difficult time locating particular islands and points of interest.

2. How long do people here typically spend on patrol? I seem to be all over the place in my current career, with patrols lasting from a few days to nearly a month (depending on how many missions I take).

3. Is there a way for me to see the date that I started my patrol? The captain's log (while on the water) seems a little terse. Is there a way to beef up the log during a patrol?

4. Several times I've been given a patrol mission northwest of the Solomon Islands, east of Rabaul. Every time I've been on this mission, I run into absolutely no shipping of any kind. Airplanes buzz around overhead, but no ships. Is this a bugged patrol?

None that I know of. I suggest downloading one off the net for reference.

You answered your question...depending on how many missions you take. I go until the torps have run dry.

I agree, the Capt log is pretty much non-existent. Create you own hand written log. I do.

Running stock game? If so, I believe this was a dead spot in stock game.

Hey I think I know of a way to create a timestamp in your log book sort of: when you first start out send a status report. Then do so periodically, and view how long you've been out just view your Sent Messages log. Seems like it should work unless I am missing something.

Good fishing

For maps, if you're not using one of the larger mods (e.g. Trigger Maru) that already incorporates it, this mod adds numerous labels to islands, passages, etc:

This may help as well:
