Default Where is the USS Jimmy Carter Submarine ??

Quote:
Why would I care? Well, for a couple of reasons. The USS Jimmy Carter isn't just any old run-of-the-mill nuclear attack submarine. No, no. The Jimmy Carter (SSN-23) is one hot piece of kit. It is the one submarine in the US fleet which is designated a Multi-Mission Platform and is purpose built to carry out a number of roles in special warfare, undersea surveillance and other really sneaky stuff.

:hmm::hmm::hmm:

Quote:
the rumors are that the Navy's newest nuclear sub, the USS Jimmy Carter, has been designed for spywork, with a "special capability... to tap undersea cables and eavesdrop on the communications passing through them," according to the AP.
The rumors are right, Military.com's undersea warfare experts believe. Here's what retired Rear Admiral Hank McKinney, the former commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet's submarine force, had to say:
The Navy has for years carried out special surviellance missions with nuclear submarines. Most of these missions utlilized attack submarines that were not extensively modified. Specialized communications intercept equipments were installed in existing spaces on board these submarines. A few have been modified for special oceanographic missions and capabilities. In the past, these included USS HALIBUT, USS SEAWOLF, USS RICHARD B. RUSSELL, and USS PARCHE. Each of these submarines was modified to accomodate these new missions. In the case of USS JIMMY CARTER, all of the modifications were made before the submarine was delivered to the Navy. This submarine will be utilized to conduct many specialized missions, some of which will be routine unclassified oceanographic research operations which will advance our knowledge of the ocean. Some of the missions will be highly classified missions which I am unable to comment on. (emphasis mine)
The plot thickens:

Spy agency taps into undersea cable

Former intelligence officials say the agency made its tap with the help of a customized sub. "It's a submarine capable of bringing a length of cable inside a special chamber, where the men then do the work," while the sub hugs the ocean floor, says one former official. The surface ships used by undersea-cable companies to install and repair cables have similar chambers--called jointing rooms--where crews work on the delicate fibers. When repairing a broken cable, cable companies generally lift one end of the rupture to the surface and into the jointing room, splice in a new length of cable, then lift the other end of the rupture and repeat the process.

In 1997, the NSA and the Navy proposed equipping the USS Jimmy Carter with such a chamber, as part of a "special operations" upgrade to the $2.4 billion sub.

:hmm:

The latest cut interrupted service to the UAE, a US ally. im guessing this is a counter-strike by somebody, probably the Russian navy...which has been on alert since this crap started.

Cable damage hits 1.7m Internet users in UAE

whos been cutting up these damn cables!!!?? :hmm:

its been missing ever since, its not at its home port, where is it :hmm: hasnt even been commisioned..

The Jimmy Carter primarily operates in the Pacific Ocean (It is based in Seattle Wa) and conducts operations against both China and Russia. Little likelyhood that it would be wasting its time in the Gulf.

More conspriracy BS.

Anywhere the ocean is shallow enough for a ship to drop anchor there is a chance for damage to undersea cables. Given that the gulf is one of the most travelled waterways in the entire world it is not suprising that damage would occur in that area.

Also, if one intends to tap into an undersea cable for intelligence purposes one finds a way to do so without alerting the entire world that one is doing it. To actually cut, not one but two cables, does not accomplish that objective.

But hey that's ok, the story fits in with your preconcieved hatred for the evil US government boogieman, so who cares how far fetched it is?

Sadly, there aren't many who get that Cold War reference anymore.

It is also known that there have been two other cuts off of the coast of Egypt...soo....I guess look for sightings of the Carter transiting the Suez Canal and showing up in the Persian Gulf...all in three days.

I highly doubt the boat would show itself anywhere near the area.

Partly my point...if the JC would've been responsible for the multiple cable cuts during those three days, the boat would've had to transit around Africa for goodness sakes.

I agree. Since its named after Carter it is probably on a humanitarian mission, bringing rice, and goodwill to the world, or building houses.:rotfl:
