3rd patrol, Kaptain Hans Wolf, U-45

Another patrol zone off the southern coast of france. our first contact came just north of scapa flow. a lone c2 cargo ship, we torpedoed her twice and she went to the bottom. we continued south towards our patrol zone, on the managing to sink a couple of 2,000 ton cargo ships with our deck gun.

we patroled our grid, without any contacts, then headed north again. i decided to enter the port at loch ewe to see what we could find. our sonar picked up a stationary warship, wich turned out to be a nelson battleship. it took 3 torpedos to send all 30,000 tons to the bottom. we prepared to leave, when we encountered a destroyer. the water in loch ewe was very shallow, so we simply had to stay quiet.

the destroyer made two depth charge runs, very close to us. the third was dead on target. the depth charges delivered major damage to most of our compartments, and their wasnt a lot we could do to fix her, as the destroyer would here us. we lost two good sea men in the forwared compartment, and the destroyer made another run, this time only delivering minor damage to the conning tower.

after about an hour of cat and mouse games with the destroyer, we managed to leave the port, and repaired the boat as much as we could. the eletric engines were in bad shape, and our attack periscope was completely destroyed. we set off for kiel, thankfully we never encountered another enemy ship, as our sub could not handle a deep dive to try and evade an enemy warship.

we returned to kiel, with cheers all round. we had sunk nearly 50,000 tons of enemy shipping, but we had lost two good men in the process. U-45 was in bad shape and it would take time to repair her. two of the crew were awarded iron crosses, and i was also awarded with the iron cross second class.

keep an eye out for my 4th patrol report. thanks.

Good hunting, Herr Kaleun!! Make sure you qualify one of your PO's with the repair qualification after that patrol!
