Default Dell XPS 720 and SH3 & SH4

Hey Kaleuns

Anyone have any experience using this new Dell XPS 720 for either SH3 or SH4?

I'm considering purchasing a new system to replace my old Dell Dimension 4600 and was wondering if someone might have one?

I was also considering a Dell Inspiron 530 running XP (which is considerably cheaper). Any perspective or advice would be appreciated!

Cheers, all

astroglobe,
There are numerous threads on this forum and also on the SHIV forum as to power needed and video card needed.
Briefly, you will need something like a duocore mid range processor, 2Gb RAM or more and a video card with enough power to run the games.

Looking at the 720 specs, I cannot imagine any problems running SH3 or SH4 on it. If anything, it's overkill for reasonable performance of either sim as it significantly exceeds the minimum specs.

The price of the 720 black models isn't too bad, for what you get (single 8800GT video). The red systems with their 1KW power supplies and dual 8800GT SLI video ramp up pretty steep in price.

The bundle of the black 720 with 22 inch LCD is a fair deal for a OEM system at $1999 (quad core Q6600 cpu, 3GB RAM, 8800GT 512MB vid), and Dell LCDs are pretty nice monitors.

Using an XPS myself (Silver) and you can run everything at High-Res anytime with that monster. (Quad proc, 4GB RAM, 700 GB HD, 800GT vidcard).

SHIV No problem!!!

(There is a hotfix for SHIV patch 1.04 helping out the GT8800 card. Dont have those cards in Romania or what??? )

For SHIII/SHIV a simpler Dual core machine with a decent vidcard and som RAM will do the trick as well.

I run a black XPS 720 with a 8800 GT and 4 G of RAM. It comes with a 750W Power unit which is key for the newer graphic cards. It runs Crysis and SH3 & SH4 on very high graphic settings with no problem.

Don't buy an Inspiron. They're a lot cheaper for a reason. Latitudes are good machines, but not usually well equipped for gaming since they're aimed at the corporate market. XPS seems to get mostly good reviews, but some people report problems.
