Default Mysterious damage?

I was leaving Lorient on my 18th GWX 2.0 combat patrol, had turned west between the mainland and the island at the mouth of the tributary, when suddenly I'm taking damage. I was on the surface running no more than 64x TC at 1/3 ahead, have not enabled Sabotage and Malfunctions in SH3 Commander, and got no word from the crew as to the cause of the damage.

The first time it happened, I exited the game and restarted the mission, but it happened again at the same locale. Both times I had damage in the forward crew compartment and in the electric motor room. The damage was minor, no flooding, and it didn't take long for a damage control party to get everything sorted out and I continued on my patrol. I'm always careful to navigate the middle of channels to avoid shoals, plus, the depth under keel was 11 meters. I'm relieved the incident was fairly inconsequential, but still, the source of the damage is a mystery. I've been in and out of Lorient many times without incident, but the GWX manual does show an anti-sub net extending southward from the mainland. Could that be the cause of the damage?

You may have hit a subnet or mine (Probably a mine). Both were present in the German owned harbors for protection. If you go to your nav map, in the top left corner of the map are a bunch of pull down sheets. One is labled "Oberkommando Der Kreiglmarine Minen- und Abwehrnetzakarte." in the lower left hand corner of the sheet.

This page has on it the maps of all the German ports and shows the locations of the mines and subnets at the mouths of the harbors.

if the damage was not severe with compartments showing red then it was probably a subnet intended to keep British subs from port raiding.

Just as the allies net and mine their harbors so do the Germans.

As a rule of thumb just follow your escort out to sea and he will lead you through the protected zone.

They mine those entrances, wise to swing well eastward of that little island in front of Lorient. There is a pull down chart showing the areas around the bases mined and netted. You might be wise to take the command away from Bernard if you managed to hit the same 1 twice

Having looked at the map for Lorient, you hit a subnet. You have to go South close to the island before turning West to miss it.

I am inclined to agree, but fortunately I have the benefit of someone of your stature to point me in the right direction.
