What effect does raising or lowering the SD radar mast do?

Is it just additional range?

And for that matter, was it worth spending the renown for the advanced SD radar?

The advanced SD radar is well worth the cost. Raising the mast will let you detect planes while submerged at periscope depth which can be very, very helpfull.

You'll need either TMaru or the stand-alone mod made by Anvart (found here, scroll down to the bottom of the post and follow the link).
