Default Pc Or Laptop???

lo fellow kaleuns

was thinking of renewing my old-creaking-loyal pc in the near future.
recently ive noticed posts on guys here playing sh3 on laptops......
now im no tech freak so forgive me my ignorance, but i thought laptops werent suited to gaming in most cases...due to the small size for cooling fans ....and also short battery life with bigger games.
am i living in the past...should i get another stack system to replace my trusty old friend...or go for a laptop???
ive got around 600-700 quid kinda in my mind for budget

any ideas???:hmm:

I own both.. and don't do heavy gaming on my laptop, because of the reasons you mentioned. Go with a desktop. Easier to upgrade, better cooling and bigger monitors (although you can add external monitors to a laptop also). But mainly for the cooling and upgrading, a desktop is far more convenient and cheaper to build/buy.

Tool.

Desktop system.

Less money, less chance of theft, more "bang for the buck" as we put it in our part of the world.

Go with a desktop, I have a laptop and my desktop isn't working. Using this laptop to play games is a pain in the neck.

If Gaming is your priority then there is no contest -get a desktop, you'll get much more bang for your buck, plus future upgrades.

You should go for a Laptop ONLY if you need it... Say you travel a lot because of your job and you need to stay conected and have a little something to play with... then yeah... go for it. Otherwise, I wouldn't think about, not even for a single minute!
Well, at least here in South America, the cost of acquiring/updating a LAPTOP is way higher than the cost of keeping a desktop PC really up to date.

I would generaly agree on desktop PC's for gaming, and a good CRT.

Laptops have a coolness to them though, if you got the extra cash or perhaps don't get caught up in the upgrade path. I have the same tower case for my pc since the 486 days, no lie. Dang side panels are around somewhere.

I do all my gaming on a laptop. Not because it´s "better" but simply because that is what I have. Vanilla SHIII works, but the constant roar of the fans when I play can get on my nerves at times... The desktop wins the performance/cost comparison hands down, since most mainstream desktops will beat just about any mainstream laptop when it comes to graphics.
...But on the other hand: I play a lot of stategy games like Hearts of Iron 2 and Civ IV and these games run great on my laptop, so if portability is a perk you are willing to pay for and non gpu-intensive games make the bulk of your gaming... Well - go mobile!

I have tried SHIII on a new laptop and was not very happy. Screen refresh was slow and a lot of hangups. When you have a DD coming at you you don't need hangups. I was so impressed with GWX 2 and all the great mods I gave my wife my old desktop and bought an Alienware core 2 Duo 2.13 gig 1066MHG GE force 7950 GT graphics card 512 meg. Pricy but I an in heaven playing GWX 2 with mods.

Thanks to the GWX team and modders for taking a big slice out of my piggy bank.

I'm also looking at either laptop or desktop and am in the fortunate position of being able to buy from Canada, USA or the UK.

The stats that Laufen zum Ziel mentions above can be found on laptops, but you'd be looking at paying around GBP1000 or US$2000 for one. I'm in a performance vs. portability quandry at the moment and, as I am looking for one specifically to play GWX 2.1, I'm also after one with a numpad. After a lot of research the best prices I could find were on amazon.co.uk, so if you're still looking then that would give you an idea of what standard of laptop you could get for your money. If you link through subsim (on the 'Quick Links' above) then I believe subsim gets a kick back from the sale although it doesn't cost you a penny extra. I know this works for books, games etc. but am not sure about higher end items.

If you're looking for a system and don't need the portability, go for the desktop every time as it will give you the flexibility to upgrade as you need to.

Fully agree with everyone else. Desktop. Easier and cheaper to upgrade AND you can game with a much larger screen with minimum fuss.
And to top it all off, you can purchase a decent computer for gameing for half the price of a laptop these days.

Got both but really only use the laptop for innernet access and not for gaming, though the kids get relegated to gaming on it when Kaleun Dad is at sea. Get a desktop.
