GWX 1.3
i was on patrol in july 1940, and i came across the convoy, THE convoy, the kinda convoy that will make or break a career. it broke mine but thats later, okay, i got a large merchant and immediately an escort was on me, i dove and as he ran his first pattern of depth charges, i heard an explosion that was different than the cans.i came back up to peri depth and i saw that he blew his DC racks off, and he was technically out of action. however, he would keep doing dry runs on me and he hounded me until i was outta batteries, and i opted to sit on the bottom, until i ran out of air.... all the while, in both good and bad weather, he kept doing dry runs. it really bugged me, anyone else have this happen to them? ive had DD's blow their entire back off, and then sink right by my periscope when i come up to see what all the comotion was about... one time i attacked a convoyed, took out 3 cargos and one troop liner each with 1 torp to the broilers on all of em. then forced to dive and evade, while i was playing cat and mouse i heard a new contact... warship, longrange, berring about 90 degrees... it was closing fast... i heard huge explosions and lots of sinking merchants, so i decided to come on up, to my amazement the bloody admiral kipper had come to my rescue!
![]() with the destroyers distracted i manned the deckgun and the 37mm AA myself and took out many other ships, incuding a black swan with 105 shells... disabled her rudder first then prop wiht the 37mm the kipper fought valiantly but was severely damaged, so i stayed with her for awhile, the british sent a taskforce ( or maybe they found us by chance... but in my head they sent it) and we managed to destroy the ships, (bloody kipper stole most of my torp kills before my damn torps got there!!!) with her fore guns out of commission i left her around the tip of the netherlands to go back to germany for repairs, then continued with my patrol... probably one of the most exicting ones ive had!

From the GWX 2.1 update thread: (Progress has been made reducing this bug... read on)
I'm not one for bashing the SH3 devs, but it looks like we found a shortcut they took in reference to ships that have a habit of depthcharging themselves when the player is at a shallow depth in-game. Portions from one of my posts in our dev forum regarding this matter: (refined for casual users) Important regarding depth precision! (ASW vessel suicide by self depthcharging) The big problem with setting the depth precision to a low number... is that the old 'laser-guided depth charges' issue returns.... Tightening/reducing the depth precision value will make being depth-charged even less surviveable. Adjusting this value should be viewed as a LAST DESPERATE action... and cannot be allowed to be reduced below '10m.' ALSO, The damaging blast radius of the standard 'ashcan' DC is set to 14m. As a result any depth precision of 14 or less will probably damage the player sub every time that DC's are fired on-target in the horizontal plane. (The ****** will REALLY cry to momma then!) Since we can't decrease the laser guided accuracy on the horizontal plane, we are stuck with having to decrease the stock DC accuracy by loosening the depth precision... which represents the vertical plane as you guys know. Secondarily, if we change the damage output values of the DC's in any way, it will upset the entire player U-boat damage model in unknown ways.... and apart from people hoping for ***deleted*** This is going to be a tough fix guys. We are going to have to approach it from a combination of angles... and is why I think it is more attractive.... to make stern DC racks invulnerable to damage and propellors very tough to damage by DC... as opposed to changing things that remove other good effects... or reintroduce old bad bugs. SH3 leaves us with too little string to tie our boots here. ASW units blowing themselves up certainly happened in stock SH3... unfortunately it looks like our corrective measures made to remove the perfect ballistic solutions generated by the AI in SH3... increased the frequency of ASW unit suicide though damn it. The measurements in question have been largely unchanged since before GWX... since TGW 1.0 even. For our first release, the DC settings were one of the most tested changes. This absolutley sucks... and I HATE it that it is used as a CHEAT by players to exploit a weakness in the game at shallow depths. If only the 'detonate_depth' entries in the DepthCharges.sim were functional... it would be an easy fix. Instead we are stuck with a complicated problem to somehow sort. |

Just in response to another aspect of the initial post........Sitting prone on the bottom does not prevent the escorts from pinpointing your position. You are better off trying to move silently away (into deeper water if your initially in the shallows).

However, the latest GWX2 fix on the gun makes doing this unlikely as the gun pitches and rolls so much as it really did, it is not easy to hit a cargo at 200 meters in anything but a calm sea. What GW team continue to strive for is making this as much within the limits of SH3 a recreation of what it was like to be a Kaleun. Your description never occurred ever in real life. In all WWII one U-Boat score a deck gun hit on a corvette that was the sum total of ship to boat combat success. Again, if recreating history in similar experience is not your thing then by all means have fun. I remember the early days when taking out a corvette at 4000 meters was cool but that is so unrealistic it detracts from being a Kaleun. With GWX2 you do not stand a chance against a one gun trawler, heck you are unwise to duel a one gun merchant ship and that is reality, if that is the goal. Not criticizing as I do believe the right way to run any game/sim is the way you enjoy it. For me there is no end to finding recreating the difficulties U-Boatmen faced and finding a way to both succeed and survive the later being the harder the more real the sim. Wulfmann

Speaking of realism: does anybody know how many escorts actually damaged themselves during the war? Certainly not as many as in this game, but I bet there were some. People have been known to do dumb things under stress.

If you dig around on the web, I seem to recall at least a few other mentions of specific ships damaged by their own DCs - one US DE that I cannot remember the name of damaged her shafts pretty badly in an Atlantic attack. So while it did happen, you're right, it seems relatively rare.
