Default XXI speed problem

I just departed from Bergen in my XXI class sub (what a beauty) when i saw that when i travel at full speed the boat is only making 9 knots speed. How is that possible because the XXI can travel much faster. Is it because of the depth? (I just departed from Bergen depth under keel is 11 meters) hope to hear from you soon guys! Greetings and love from a subsimlover!

If you use SH3 Commande with "Malfunctions and sabotague" option ticked, it can be a technical problem (diesel malfunction) - to fix it go back to base (or simply reload the game, which is not quite exactly what the feature is for).

Also if you were submerged before, your batteries could be still loaded by one of the diesel.

i use sh3 commander with malfunctions on it can be an engine malfunction i dont know. I think i will go back to base and depart for a second patrol. First i want to see what she is doing in deeper water. (the reason can be shallow water, the subs aft end is suck to the bottom thats why the speed drops)

No, its definately to do with Commanders malfunction/sabotage feature.

A XXI should be able to do about 17 or 18 knots flat out on the surface.

I think you just got a malfunction this time too. To check it, just save and reload the game like 2-3 times and check the speed avery time you do it. If it's the same after every reload, hen we know its something different. If it varies every time, it's SH3 Commander for sure.

The XXI was plagued with malfunctions from day one. A revolutionary construction technique, tremendous parts and material shortages along with a lot of new never before tried systems meant that everything that could go wrong did go wrong as these boats were gradually fed into the system. Keeping that in mind the XXI is loaded with malfunction files. Sabotage wasn't so much a problem as these boats were kept under pretty close scrutiny.

Some malfunction files are single maladies easily dealt with by saving/relaunching, while a number of them contain multiple problems requiring a return to base.

IIRC they only ever performed/carried out 2 patrols and never sunk anything :hmm:

I always keep breakdowns/sabotage on for realism sake. On one of my outings, my engine broke down mid mission. Suddenly surfaced in my VIIB I could only do about 5 knots at flank and submerged, 1-2 knots at flank.
Of course this occured when I was all the freakin' way in the middle of the ocean west of Ireland.
And.. to top things off, I ran into a completely un-escorted small convoy of like 10 ships. Even surfaced with pristine weather, I couldn't keep up with them !

Another note on Sab/Mal. The VIIB and IXB were older model boats. I wrote both to experience increased malfunctions which grow as the years progress(compared to the newer models). If your sailing a B model later in the war you're going to spend a lot of time fixing things in the middle of the ocean.
