Default Ship Damage and and Conning Movement

Well I think there was a point in playng SH4 that when I attacked a freighter or some other ship you could see the damage that you inflicted on it, I 'm almost sure of it. however tonight i put one fish (last one I had) into a medium composite and then went to town on it with shells and would you beleive that thing sunk without a scratch on it anywhere!! I know this can't be normal but at least in my game now it seems to be the norm. and then I went into the tower ordered flank speed and normal dive and the back of the comaprtment went down first (I have been using a S-boat untill tonight, never have used another before). I know it was the rear of the conning tower because I have seen the inside of Gato class subs conning towers. SO thinking maybe something was haywire I shut the game off restarted it and tried again, and had the same response the wheel at the front of the tower was up and the rear of the compartment was down. any feed back on these two things would be appreciated.
