Default activ sonar on IJN Destroyers

Hy Kaleuns

Sorry, if there are already Threads of this theme, but could find nothing.
I have read in my Books, that the IJN didnt have avtiv sonar. In the net, there are other statements. Can someone with real knowlege help me a litle?

Yes they had it although not all IJN destroyers were equipped with it at the start of the war. Also the skill level varied from ship to ship.

I can't consult my books right now, but I'm certain that most of their destroyers had it. The problem they encountered in the early part of the war was the lack of destroyers for escort work. Small patrol boats were pressed into service, some of them without listening equipment at all. In fact, there are records of convoys sailing with the only escort being a merchant ship with depth-charge rails on the stern.

Later in the war, though: well, we did lose more than a few subs, and they weren't sunk by luck and chance. The Japanese knew what they were doing by mid-war, and they did it quite well.

In "Clear the Bridge" Dick O'Kane mentioned during the USS Tang's fifth patrol that they were being hunted by an older destroyer using its fathometer as active sonar, just an interesting tidbit.
