"O mein Gott, it was close" story (or maybe stories?)

Can't believe what's just happened to me in game. I have to share it.

March 23, 1940, U-52 (VIIB), at the entrance to Ofot Fjord waiting for the prey (i.e. allied shipping fleeing Narvik or allied warhips). Finallt got a contact at about midnight. Soon after saw the ship with the periscope - a fatty medium cargo, going slow/medium. Surfaced, plotted a bit to get the best solution, went much closer to identify the ship - lucky me, a Norwegian one. Prepared two torpedoes as stated in BdU orders: a magnetic under-keel one and an impact just below the water line.

Fired.

And immediately after - a thought: why is the ship going EAST?! Why no escorts around?! Why... oh why is the flag... GERMAN!!? I have problems reading flags and I should be more careful. But now, what could I do with the 2 torpedoes cutting the waves? Simply nothing. I didn't even try to pray, as I don't remember any of these. Just cursed a lot.

And what? The magnetic torpedo prematured half from to the ship.

The impact one bounced off the hull.

Imagine my joy... Usually I'd be angry for loss of two torpedoes, but this time I thanked the constructors that designed this crap!

That was close. :rotfl:

It's not so bad, if you manage to sink some significant enemy tonnage, like a Battleship or 2, I once got away with sinking an Italian freighter by also sinking a battleship, they even gave me a medal

if not, well....

Best not mention this incident ever again I would think, unless you like a warm sunny wall, a cigarette and blindfold of your choice....

At least you properly followed standing order number 1

Ya know', we sank HMS Nelson just a few days before nearby...

Maybe it wouldn't so bad with BdU, but who could live with that shame?

Actually, friendly fire did happen in WW2, I remembered to have read somewhere that one U-boat was sunk by another U-boat's torpedo in a convoy battle.

I have been guilty of sinking one of our own

- a big merchant during the Norway campaign.

It was pitch dark with a complete overcast, and the ship was traveling alone and blacked out, and about a day behind a reported enemy task force. How was I to know? - the flag was completely invisible under such conditions and all of the reports and our own contacts over the previous week had been enemy forces.

And, and, :hmm: it was raining, yeah, that's it. it was raining, hard. Raining toads

honest, big bizarre hoary mucky toads. And there were locusts - swarms of them everywhere (or where those flying fish?), all squished up against the Uzo lens. I tried to wipe it clear, but, but,...

It wasn't my fault, I swear!!!

About a year ago I had a really terrifying experience...

Was attacking a convoy with massive ships in super-lousy weather...

Positioned myself so that the convoy would "run me over" and there was some real tension when waiting what would come out of the mist...

Then out of the mist comes the lead destroyer right at me, but he was zig-zaging...so he turned and I can't imagine how close it must have been that he rammed me (100% realism no external view) because when I lowered my scope he was almost heading right at my aft...so just hearing his engines and waiting for a big crash-sound and the "Das BooT isT bescHädischGT Herr kaleuN !!!" I heard him pass me by.

Then no more ships was spotted but my hydrophone was giving away sounds at all angles and I was like

Then I put all ahead full (still submerged ofcourse) and ended up going along side a whale factory ship on 12000 tons...gathered the solution data and set all torpedoes for magnetic pistol.

All 3 torpedoes hit and I escaped undetected in the deep. Taking the whale factory ship with me ofcourse.
