Default Problem patching to 1.4b

Hey,

I'm having a problem patching to 1.4b (I'm reinstalling SH3)...

It's shows the fault line: data/Menu/de_help.txt: unknown version

It's the second time it does this, so reinstalling doesn't seem to help. Also, if i just remove the file, it gives the same fault, but with the english version of this file (and I really need that!)...

Any help?

I have an XP, and a European version of the game

I'm not 100% sure but I think if you delete the txt file in question the game will be patched.

Won't I need it?
Or can I remove it and place it back afterwards?

As I said I'm not 100% sure but I think you can just delete it and patch the game. After that you can play SH3 without any problems. I don't think you need that file to play the game

Sounds like that is what I had last year, as said by melnibonian that is what I did and all was OK.

I had the same thing, it's already patched and will run without disc.
When you get that error message up just click on exit.

When you see this error, first you must check the title of that patch installer. There are a lot of patches, 1.2>1.4 1.3>1.4 or 1.0>1.4 maybe you download wrong... If you have good patch and it still doesn't work you should download other version of that patch because there are always two version of each patch. There is US patch and EMEA. That should works. Good Luck.

I'm not a fan of merely deleting the files in question and hoping for the best. That is simply a band-aid solution with the band-aid most likely to fall off soon after installation.

I mean, you are getting the error *for a reason*. Perhaps you are already patched to v1.4b? Perhaps you are installing the wrong (ie US) patch over your European copy of SH3? Perhaps before reinstalling you didn't completely remove the previous installation (ie residual files), etc etc...

Find the problem and fix it *at source* and you won't have to worry about error messages. Otherwise it's more than likely that you'll be back in a few days asking how to fix your CTDs...

The reason you are getting the error is the SHIII uninstaller leaves a few .txt files (four I believe) behind when it uninstalls the game. These files need to be deleted by hand before reinstalling the game. They can be safely deleted when patching as they are replaced by the patch.

was in a rush, what I meant was, run the patch, when you get the error message
just close the box and its done. You will find that program will run without disc as well.

Herr Trigger.

You are 100% correct.

About 10 days ago I forged ahead and finally installed GWX 2.0. I followed the instructions of uninstalling all of SHIII. Reinstalled the DVD 1.0 version. Attempted to apply the install of the 1.4b patch and hit the same brick wall - "data/Menu/de_help.txt: unknown version".

Research revealed to delete ALL "xx_help.txt" files. I had 3 - en_help.txt, fr_help.txt, and I cannot remember the third one. Deleted all 3 - xx_help.txt files, fired up the 1.4b patch and it proceeded to complete the patch error free. Installed GWX 2.0 and then yelled WOW! when I saw GWX 2.0 for the first time!
