Default Very specific CTD

I'm experiencing a very specific CTD. I haven't had CTDs since I upgraded my RAM to 2gig until now, and this particular CTD has repeated each time.

I'm running GWX 2 with no other mods other than those included with GWX except for U-Boat 1.2, and am loading the game using SH3Commander and SH3Weather. I haven't had any problems at all loading, running, playing or saving except for this one particular instance.

I started a new career: 7th/13th Flotilla, starting 1 Sept. 1944 (I wanted to see what it was like running late in the war . . . ::shudders:: . . . EGADS!!). Using SH3Commander I selected the VIIC/42. I did no upgrades prior to the first patrol, except for filling out my crew.

Leaving Trondheim (and being given a beautiful send-off by Allied bombers :p ) I experience no problems until I just clear out into open water. Then, each time, at about the same position and date/time, I CTD. It seems, in the fleeting moment before crashing, as if something is spawning in my immediate area, and that the spawning is what triggers the CTD. I've reloaded and replayed this five times, and it's CTDed exactly the same each time.

I've tried searching to see if there have been prior posts/issues with the VIIC/42 but have come up empty. I'm just wondering f anyone has some ideers what the weasel in the henhouse might be.

Are you saying this only happens with the VIIc/42?

If not, it's probably a spawn thing as you say... I'll try a testrun of this later tonight, do you bychance have a screenie of the course you take out of Trondheim for accuracy's sake?

Well, the VIIC/42 was the only one I've tried. I've no idea if the same happens with the other choices (VIIB, VIIC or VIIC/41). I'm afraid I wasn't in a 'debugging-mode' at the time. ::wry grin:: And after six consecutive "start game--load career--get my keester bombed just leaving port--CTD just when entering the Atlantic" when all I was looking forward to was a bit of relaxing play, well . . .

I'd deleted the career and started afresh with a VIIC in July 44. So I don't know whether it happens with other boats. As to screenies, as the career is deleted I can't precisely reconstruct/duplicate, but I did my best with this:

Each time, after making that final course change, shortly thereafter I'd CTD.

BBW, I'm afraid I don't remember, and as I've deleted the career . . . ::mutters::

That screenie helps allright

If BBW hasn't figured it out before I wake up tomorrow (it's almost 5am here ) from looking at the campaign files I'll take a different boat for a spin out of Trondheim and see what happens...

as to the bombers, yeah I noticed those before...grumble grumble, at least you have some room to maneuver in the Trondheimfjord, imagine doing the same thing in Lorient

Same here shortly.

AvH, did you get to hear the cool air raid sirens?

(I can't believe no one has commented on those yet.)

Heheh, Kapt. when those sirens go off, we're usually a bit busy to notice, what with nasty planeses dropping their eggs and machinegunning everything in sight and whatnot :rotfl:

Sorry for double post. Couldn't reproduce your CTD, only spawns I saw in that area were a bunch of small german ships.

conceivably it could be something with one of those but have never seen it before.
Kpt. L and BBW are on it too, if we find anything after all we'll let you know

I also spent the last hour or so trying to reproduce your CTD AvH.

I cruised an ever-widening search pattern in the area you described on the same date plus 2-3 days in game.

The most exciting thing that happened was only spotting a Norwegian tugboat.

I didn't even see a single aircraft.

No CTD.

Ah well. Thanks guys for looking into it. I wish I hadn't been so hasty deleting the career now. Not that I was exactly hasty, that is. :p

Kpt. Lehmann, yes, I did notice the air raid sirens. ::grins:: And the buoy bells, too. Although I enjoy listening to the buoy bells a LOT more than I do the air raid sirens!! :p

::wry laugh:: I'm sorry, Kapt., that I haven't commented more on the neat things I've slowly been discovering. It's the little things (that, actually, aren't so 'little') that make the overall immersion feel so much more in-depth and 'real'. But I have to agree with KeptinCranky: You get kinda busy once those sirens start howling.

I've been meaning to post some screenies I took of one of those raids. Awesome!! Search lights all over the place scanning the sky, bombs landing all over the place --on ships, atop the sub pens . . . and all around me!! Between the search lights, the air raid sirens, bomb bursts all over creation, every ship and land unit blasting flak upstairs . . .

Any chance the land units' flak guns could leave smoke clouds when they go off? It'd be kinda neat to see the sky peppered with lingering flak bursts. ::grins::

I'll put my masochistic hat back on later tonight and start up a career using the identical settings I had before, just to see if I can get the CTD to recreate. As an aside, I did have one other odd thing happen, twice (other than the CTDs, that is). If you look at my screenie there is a horizontal green line about the middle of the chart; right above that is a parallel red line marking my path. Twice (one at 64X and once at 128X) I was instantly destroyed by a collision with something. I've no idea what. Adding to that oddity was that my patrol recap was showing me credit for sinking a destroyer. Heh.

Anyway, thanks once again to everyone for taking time to look into this. I appreciate the effort!
