Default Waste of Time, or charming devotion?

If you look around Wikipedia, especially around articles concerning fictional entities, the detail of the entries is astounding at times. For example (because I'm currently on a Command and Conquer jones) check out the articles on the GDI and NOD factions:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Defense_Initiative

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brotherhood_of_nod

Many of the items (albeit, could be fake) could only be derived from speculation or extensive research, as much of the information is not found in the games which feature GDI and NOD.

My question to you is this, does this represent to you, people who have way too much spare time, or does it represent a true fanbase for a product or series?

Oh, and just for giggles, which is your favourite side, GDI or NOD? For me, its GDI all the way.

In the mid-80s - i was close to end my school years -, I was playing a postal SF strategy game on regional (Berlin) level, you ruled your galactic empire which you had to built yourself etc: Galactic Civilisation version 0.5, so to speak. You could gain construction points for contributing to the club magazine and writing separate fictional stuff about the power you represented, or write fictional action reports, pretty much the stuff you find in SF fanzines.

I wrote a 60 pages encyclopedia on the history of my faction, including biographies of influential historical fiugures, a 30 or 40 pages essay on the astronomical constellation of my home planet and moons including astronomical history and geology, a small 20 pages booklet on language, and a 50 pages or so catalogue on technology and weapons. Needless to say that Tolkien as well as the two manuals of the encyclopedia of Dune (each of them as thick as the first novel) were my idols.

After I successfully made my audience there to read itself to death, I waited a while and then started to target internet forums a decade later :rotfl:

Oh, and I earned enough construction points to turn the whole galaxy into my private household

Skybird: useing 160 words to say "I write a lot".

Is it a waste of time?
Well, perhaps a better question is "what is a good use of time?".

It's a important question too, considering how little we have.
Also, it is a hard question, perhaps if we knew the answer then we would find that
spending time looking for the answer is a waste of time. Then again perhaps not.

Letum: 70 words to say nothing at all really.

Fans? How about the devs or the publisher?
