Does the mission difficulty setting override the basic games settings you set from the main menu?
I've custom set my games settings to have limited fuel and battery levels but when I start playing career missions set to 'normal' difficulty, it seems I have unlimited diesel fuel, anyway. I've sailed from Pearl Harbor to Japan with no change in my diesel fuel levels. |

When you start your career, on the left side in the office is a radio on the shelf. Click that and then set up your game play options. It will save it from then on.

What a difference. It takes almost half a tank to get from Pearl to Japan, depending on your route. I hope I can at least make Midway on the way back.

You will need to be concious of your fuel. Normally I will go flank to Midway out of Pearl. Refuel. From there on I go at 10 kts to my first mission point. It is slow going but you have just over 3/4 of a tank. Plenty of fuel to patrol. When I do hit my patrol area of set speed at 7kts. The race is not won by the swift but by the stealthy. I only go flank to chase my target. Doing this saves a lot of fuel. When I get to half a tank, I look real hard at my location, torp load out. If I can squeeze in one more mission I do so. If not, I head on home.

I thought maybe ‘Standard’ speed was what submariners used to cruise to their patrol regions while on the surface because it was the best balance between speed and fuel consumption so I’ve been using that setting to get a least within 1000 miles of Japan.
I need to be more patient. Last night I tried moving to within 1000 miles of Japan too quickly and got reckless. I spotted two destroyers and should have submerged immediately and instead dawdled on the surface too long thinking maybe they couldn’t see me at night. Should’ve figured if I can see them, they can see me. By the time I dvied it was too late. They zeroed in on me and I got depth charged and my hull cracked open. Luckily I made a save point after just departing from Midway for refueling. |

With the exception of the Wahoo skipper, most were cruising below the standard speed. In this game we lose the use of the ballast tanks for fuel that were used during the war. Such is life. But, if you cruise at 10kts from mission to mission and patrol at 7-8 kts, your sub will go as far as they did in real life.

I Proceed at 2/3 ahead for best legs in the crossing.
when on station I use what I would normally use minus one setting in order to keep tactical flexibility as much as possible to the end of the patrol. during the last week on station its free havoc on maneuver but during the first two or three its tea totaller time except when in contact with the enemy. the good news is 8192 time compression to make up the differences in time and distance. a two thirds ahead transit from midway refueling though is what makes it bearable on station. So it's possible to get back to Midway from a Japan home waters tour? I was wondering what to do once Manila fell.
I know in general, submariners ran on the surface at night and submerged during the day (in patrol waters). What's best to run at for submerged during the day light hours? Can running at 1/3 keep you from loosing your batteries before night fall? |

What you seem to have missed in AVG's post is that we are
stopping at midway on the way to and from Empire waters. also same if your sailing out of Australia topping up at Darwin on your transit to and from patrol to extend your range and time on patrol. M |

How about underwater runs for the day? How are people managing their battery life when just waiting for the next sunset? I know just sitting can do it but can you drive all day at 1/3 and still have battery life by sunset? |

I cruise submerged during the day at 2-3 kts. Plenty of battery left by sundown. Surface and hunt. Night time is the right time

Just shows what a tough job this was. At the enemy's front door and any mismanagement of your resources and your toast. I've experienced this since I tweaked my fuel options to 'limited'. I'm not even thinking of manual torpedo aiming yet. That's what I got a crew for!
