lo all
just incase any of you fellow kaleuns are looking for a late xmas present and havent already read it....then i must reccomend " Iron Coffins" by H. Werner.....a truly facinating read of the war years of wolfpack commander H . Werner...from his initiation to the commisioning of his own command....oh and while off patrol...what a life and what an end to the war for him....great reading and quite an eye opener ![]() any other good reads out there let me know, im always looking for a good atlantic battle book to read while traversing the ocean at tc1060 |

I'll second that...Iron Coffins is probably one of the best memoirs of WW2 that I've ever read (and I've read a lot of them). It's a must-read for anyone interested in the U-Boat war. Werner has got to be one of the luckiest guys on the planet to have survived the events described - he should have moved to Vegas.

I got Torpedo Junction by Homer Hickham to read (he of October Sky/Rocket Boys fame). Obviously not written by a U-boat captain, but might make for interesting reading from the other side.

the part that broke my heart and made me sigh with relief, was at the end of the book, where he gets off the train and " runs into the woods of my childhood.."
correct me if i'm wrong; and its a powerful image, heaving with sadness and longing, a need to return to safety and normality - even though its long gone...
