just incase any of you fellow kaleuns are looking for a late xmas present and havent already read it....then i must reccomend " Iron Coffins" by H. Werner.....a truly facinating read of the war years of wolfpack commander H . Werner...from his initiation to the commisioning of his own command....oh and while off patrol...what a life and what an end to the war for him....great reading and quite an eye opener
any other good reads out there let me know, im always looking for a good atlantic battle book to read while traversing the ocean at tc1060

I'll second that...Iron Coffins is probably one of the best memoirs of WW2 that I've ever read (and I've read a lot of them). It's a must-read for anyone interested in the U-Boat war. Werner has got to be one of the luckiest guys on the planet to have survived the events described - he should have moved to Vegas.

whilst reading it i couldnt help thinking how on earth he was ever getting out of those tight spots.......i would've got him to pick my lottery numbers if he lived next to me after the war!!!!
.... then again he most likely pegged it well before the lottery began!!!!!!!!

excellent,gives one the whys and wherefore regarding decisions taken on the u boat side of things.

I got Torpedo Junction by Homer Hickham to read (he of October Sky/Rocket Boys fame). Obviously not written by a U-boat captain, but might make for interesting reading from the other side.

Cool, I've read his 3 semi-biographies about his childhood in Coalwood, which I enjoyed. I'm not due back at work until the 7th of Jan, so this should give plenty of time

You might also want to consider the two volume set....Hitler's U-Boat war by Clay Blair. Possibly the most definitive work to date

to accompany this awesome tome, it might be advisable to make sandwiches for the journey - fill a couple of flasks with hot tea, pack some clothing that will take you through a whole year, inform your family you wont be around for a while - and prepare your brain for a staggering amount of indepth information - it is quite amazing !!

the part that broke my heart and made me sigh with relief, was at the end of the book, where he gets off the train and " runs into the woods of my childhood.."

correct me if i'm wrong; and its a powerful image, heaving with sadness and longing, a need to return to safety and normality - even though its long gone...
