Default Is there a way of setting the range without stadimeter?

Hi, still battling a bit with manual targeting, I can enter the speed & AOB manually but the stadimeter is a pain! I can manually calculate the range myself but there is very limited range on the dial to select & sometimes I can't move it higher than 300 yards for some reason! Do I have to use the stadimeter to get the range!
Also if there is 2 merchants & I fire at the first how do I change to the second? I unlock from the first ship & lock on to the other but the SK keeps tracking the first, I wish I could refit these subs to use U-Boat TDC!

There's no way to manually set the range, apart from turning the range wheel. If you search the forums you'll find a recent thread where this was discussed. Changing targets is easily accomplished by taking a range reading of the new target and plugging in the AOB. The speed is naturally the same in a convoy situation. No need to turn off PK or anything, the new data will completely override the old. Locking on targets has nothing to do with the TDC, it just keeps the scope on the target for you.

That's funny, the Germans just offered to trade Japan five Type 7s for a captured American TDC!:rotfl:

I believe you can ping targets using the Hydrophone and send the range to the TDC.

And actually once you figure it out, you'll see that the American TDC was a much more powerful tool than the German's.

Seems to be very limited range, probably shoud use the stadimeter to set range a very far away then use the wheel manually, hopefully it would then have a decent range to select from! Maybe I will just have to keep using the Stadimeter! I have sunk my first ship though, just couldn't figure how to get the second, I do now, thanks.

I haven't found Hydraphones, only sonar & radar stations, I tried to press H but does nothing, if they have how do you get to the station?

LMAO Reece, you haven't even looked at the manual, have you?

Sonar is the device used for pinging, and it's accessible from the respective station. Watch the WernerSobe video on manual targeting with sonar-only, and you'll get the idea.

Yes I read the manual through a few times & yes it has Sonar, I have used (SD I think, cost me 500 renown), but that's not hydraphones, I would love to be able to rotate the wheel to hear the various underwater sounds, capitation etc! Must be only on U-Boats!

Default Sonar vs Hydrophone

Reece;
I don't believe the manual really differentiates between Sonar and Hydrophone as their use (in the context of these games SH3 and 4) is essentially the same. Hydrophones were basically forerunners of Sonar albeit the technology was different.

You can. Go to the sonar station and use the "home" and "end" keys to turn the hydrophone head.

Ah, I didn't even try listening, I just thought it was purely sonar, sends a signal out & recieves a reflected signal back! I will check it out!
The "Home & End" keys were not marked/mentioned in the manual or ref card, this must have been in a later patch, I've just gone from 1.1 to 1.4, I should have read the "revision update notes", probably mentioned there.
Thanks.

Not only that, it you have a mouse wheel you can turn the sonar head.

Regarding the stadimeter, you can't manually set range to much more than a thousand yards, and you can't even use the stadimeter unless you are looking at a ship. So you basically have to learn to use it sometimes if you want to start tracking while the ship is still at some distance (the only other way to get range is to send from the hydrophones).

Don't let them push you around Reece. This is probably my biggest disappointment in SH4. The stadimeter is very useful, but not necessarily in all situations (heavy seas, long range). It eliminates my favorite method of tracking a target (using paper and Hitman's Attack Course Calculator), presetting a firing solution, then waiting for the target to reach the firing point.

I keep hoping for some clever modder to add the ability to spin the range dial on the TDC.

Also, clicking anywhere on the perimeter of the hydrophone/sonar "bearing" circle will "point" the hydrophone to that spot. That's how I do it: click in the target's general bearing, then fine-tune/follow the target with the mouse wheel.
